I still like TOS version of the ship, but the TMP refit was great.

Amen, brother. The ST:TMP Enterprise is just gorgeous, and I know most people hate that whole reveal sequence in the film, but when you couple Jerry's peerless music with that absolutely wonderful starship design, you've drawn me in completely. I love that sequence.

I think they've been unable to top the TMP design. The TNG ship was, I don't know, too flat or something. And I agree with you about the most recent design - the nacelles are too much.

What, no "hand spaceship" from Starcrash? wink

Glad, too, to see the love for the T.M.P. version of Enterprise. Has seemed unfashionable from time to time to prefer it to the later models, but I agree that it's still the standard-bearer. smile

Dan

P.S: Incidentally, listening to Jerry's "Enterprise" cue right now.

And while it's never been in a movie, the long-forgotten Starbird would get an honorable mention on my list since it's one of the first toys I owned...

Great choices, especially Space: 1999. I think I would have included the Nostromo from ALIEN and the Discovery from 2001. And most of all, Spaceball One. smile

The nostromo is ok, but my favorite has to be the Sulaco from Aliens. Very menacing.

Of course since it is part of the Sulaco, an honorable mention:

Oh. My. Gosh. I owned this same toy, it was my first spaceship as well and damn, did it get a lot of play! That is so funny. I haven't thought about it in years, but was pretty freakin' cool.

The Liberator from Blake's 7. The fastest ship in the galaxy! Controlled by an advanced AI called Zen.

I have no particular favourites, but the more realistic, the better. I'm more interested in films that take place WITHIN them, anyway, pr. my other thread.

How about that great spaceship from the late 20's silent film, FRAU IM MOND (Woman in the Moon), directed by Fritz Lang?

Lang is credited with inventing the "countdown" to blast-off, simply because he wanted to inject some suspense into the proceedings!

I also loved the spaceship in WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, so sleek-looking, with that bobsled-kind of track designed for take-off.

So many cool spaceships out there. Anyone else have the old Starlog special edition thingy that was just about Spaceships? I may have to go up into the attic and dig it out...

I have my copy in my bookshelf. You should read THE SAUCER FLEET by Jack Hagerty...a great book covering lots of classic movie/tv ships with tons of photos and even blueprints

Atragon is probably my favorite -- both for deep sea visits and high flying zooming -- although I'm not sure it actually goes into outer space so maybe that disqualifies it. As mentioned in Thor's thread I'm fond of the ship in Firefly -- and also the Hooded Swan from the Star Pilot Grainger series of novels by Brian Stableford. I have the English paperback set of the 6 books -- all with covers by the great illustrator Angus McKie that depict the Swan. Some sites with galleries of Mr. McKie's work -- lots of wonderful stuff:

There's still something wonderfully cool about all those rockets that graced the covers of the pulp magazines. So sleek. With big fins!
