I'm at the Showcase. I'll still have a job there but looks like I'll be a floor manager instead. My suit was ordered today.

Don't knock it as many I know are just taking the money & running. At least you still have a job ( I agree with what you said about the TMS though).
Drop me an email sometime

Will do Dave. I'm happy that the company is looking after me but it's going to be a huge sea-change for this movie nut, from working with film to dealing with customer complaints and silly issues with the teenage staff. I'm sure it'll all work itself out in the end though smile

Congrats! Definitely the move to make.
Even though I work one day a week now I hit 40 years last month. As long as there is some celluloid out there....

Thanks Henry..I haven't run any 35mm for at least 2 years now but I know what you mean. Coming to LA in the next couple of months to see Nick Redman & the Burlingame's so maybe we can hook up for a beer?

come on up north to San Francisco - home of DOLBY LABORATORIES - and look me up

Not knowing anything about the projectionist profession, I'm curious to know what your duties will be at Universal.

Not knowing anything about the projectionist profession, I'm curious to know what your duties will be at Universal.

All of the major studios (in the UK at least) all have screening rooms where they can watch and check features, trailers & do presentations etc.

Universal are moving to new offices in central London & I have been asked to after their 2 new screening rooms. I feel very honoured to be asked

Have pleasing happy days, smile Dave with Universal, too bad 35mm has been abounded like 70mm, ain't nothing else comparable to those original film mediums.

Congratulations Dave! That's awesome! I am curious. How does one get a job as a projectionist?

Congratulations Dave! That's awesome! I am curious. How does one get a job as a projectionist?

Well when I started people were taken on by the cinema and trained then you either went where there was a vacancy or stayed where you were if there was a space. This was over 30 years ago & unfortunatly things have now changed & in the wonderful world of digital a projectionist is no longer deemed nessecary.

Cinemas seem more happy to loose shows than actually have somebody on site to fix a problem should it ocour.

This article explains better...

I'm very lucky to be leaving my current position through choice, a luxury that not all in my profession have

Face it you, haven’t done a real cinema presentation in years. When was the last time Empire did a show a real show? 10 years ago?

You should have quit the moment those Barco projectors came though the door at the Empire.
Cinema projection is become a lazy job nothing but “button pushing” now. Load the film in server program the shows and that’s it. Where is the real fun in that?

And you want to work with Universal? I’d quit and retire because they’ve done it with 70mm and now 35mm is hanging by a thread and it won’t be long now until those bastard filmmaker and studios see to that 35mm RIP.

Give it up cinema projection is dead now.

I'm, glad I quit projection years ago, seeing where its come to now. That DLP started it off and should have had sledgehammer taken to those digital projectors in 1999.

It's just progression of technology Andy, it happens to everything. In fact I feel lucky to have worked the final 10 years of 35mm and then seen in the beginning of the next step of cinema presentation. Also it can't hurt my job hunting that I left my previous job because it doesn't exist anymore.

In the case of Dave working for Universal. That's a pretty big honour and I know I would've given my left nut to get further into the world of film making. He's going to see some cool stuff and meet some very talented people.
