Really enjoyed The great Gatsby - a veritable 3D spectacle. Quite enjoyed The Hobbit, but liked it more on blu ray. Jack Reacher was a film about a shortish guy who shared a name with a literary phenomenon but little else. My most anticipated film is Cloud Atlas, which didn't seem to show at a cinema near us, and is sitting on blu ray about eight feet from me waiting for an opportunity to be seen.

This has been an interesting film year, half way into it. I can only hope the remainder provides some good entertainment.

I absolutely loved films such as Upstream Color (mastadge I hope you get a chance to see and enjoy this one), Pacific Rim, Evil Dead, Before Midnight, Oblivion, and The Lords of Salem. These six films have made the year tolerable.

These following films I found entertaining and slightly rewarding, but ultimately flawed and it's doubtful I may watch them again: The Call, Man of Steel, Side Effects, The ABCs of Death, Broken City, The Great Gatsby, V/H/S/2, To the Wonder, and John Dies at the End.

And there were luckily only a few which I saw which were absolutely not much fun and wasted my time and money, like Star Trek Into Darkness, Parker, and Spring Breakers.

I hope to get around to seeing Fast & Furious 6, World War Z, Stoker, Much Ado About Nothing, and This Is The End.

Then again, it's a Scorsese film, so I don't expect anything worthwhile there.

You do realize that's like saying, "I love cartoons, but Chuck Jones is a freakin' hack", right?

On January 6th, I decided to make a list of all films I was going to see this year -- both old and new -- and give them grades from 1 (poorest) to 6 (highest) with + and - to adjust.

Looking at that list -- and taking ONLY films that came this year into consideration (Norwegian premiere dates), it seems like LIFE OF PI is the best so far with a straight 5.

Other good ones were MAN OF STEEL (4+), ÄTA SOVA DÖ (4), WAR WITCH (4), FØR SNØEN FALLER (4), DJANGO UNCHAINED (4) and WORLD WAR Z (4). A good mix of 'popcorn movies' and more serious 'art' fare. There are several other ones I've seen with higher grades, but they're not from 2013.

Best film I have seen thus far in 2013 is the new teaser for How to Train Your Dragon 2! Seriously beats the pants out of anything else I have seen in the theatres!

It's also a valid opinion. I know Scorsese is well-loved, and while I can respect the craft that goes into his films and his passion for both the art and the industry of film, I really don't find much to like in his films either.

Agreed.

I won't even try to say what's "best," just my own favorites and least-favorites.

My favorites so far are Iron Man 3, Monsters University and Pacific Rim (listed alphabetically and in release order, not necessarily order of preference).

I enjoyed Star Trek Into Darkness considerably more than its predecessor from 2009, but that's not saying much, and it's still my least favorite movie this year as well as my second-least favorite Star Trek movie.

I'll play that game with the 2013 movies I've seen from this year:

Iron Man Three - 3+
Safe Haven - 2
Texas Chainsaw - 2-
Star Trek Into Darkness - 3-
Parker - 2-
The Last Stand 3
Family Weekend - 4+
Dark Skies - 2-
Gangster Squad 3+
Warm Bodies - 3-
Mama - 4
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2+
Snitch - 4
Man of Steel - 1
Oz the Great and Powerful 3+
The Call - 4
A Good Day to Die Hard 2-
Pacific Rim - 4+

Nothing yet even to rank a 5, let alone a 6.

I should mention that having seen PACIFIC RIM yesterday, the Best Of 2013 list is already out of date!

Likewise.

Only God Forgives (5)

Overall, this year has been very, very strong for the ones that manage to duck under the general audiences radar (and then I have to read about those people complaining that there aren't any good films out there!), and the blockbusters have been underwhelming.

I would highly recommend my top 5 favorites, but would judge accordingly to your personal preferences. Please take some time to seek out Mud, Only God Forgives, Upstream Color, Fruitvale Station, and Pacific Rim, and don't forget Before Midnight (especially if you are complaining that there are no movies about adults, for adults!!)!!! smile

OBLIVION, by far. Everything else has been a terrible remake/sequel/sidequel/reboot.

Have to update my list, now I would say,

1. Pacific Rim
2. Man of Steel
3. Kickass 2

I would choose To the Wonder and Frances Ha, but these technically are 2012 movies having premiered at film fests then. That leaves The Great Gatsby as the only 2013 film I've seen so far. I enjoyed it, but it's too problematic to be a contender for best movie of the year for me.

The upcoming films that I'm most enthusiastic about are the Coen bros' Inside Llewyn Davis and Alexander Payne's Nebraska. The trailers for Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street and the Disney Saving Mr. Banks make those films look obnoxious as hell. Here's hoping they're better than that.

Along with Inside Llewyn Davis and Nebraska as I mentioned above, I am most interested in seeing (either in the theater or on DVD):

Upstream Color
Mud
A Field in England
The Grandmaster
Like Father, Like Son
The Call
The Immigrant
Trance

So I take it by the responses so far that no one has any interest in Fruitvale Station? It's one of the strongest depictions of a youthful life wasted which I've seen, and the acting and story (based on real events) were powerful. Michael B. Jordan is a young black actor to watch, one who showed early promise on the brilliant HBO television series The Wire, and who most might know from Chronicle. I'm hoping he gets his just rewards come the dreaded award season. His lead performance as Oscar Grant is greatly nuanced and memorable. Mostly, Fruitvale Station reminded me of stirring social dramas like the French film La Haine and the American masterpiece Do The Right Thing.

I hope some will take my recommendation to heart.
