I'm just totally out of the loop. I don't have a smart phone, don't cross connect any devices, don't use the cloud, and don't use GPS of any kind. Don't use Facebook or Twitter. I never consciously got into the free stuff for giving up my privacy agreement. I guess to some extent I have as I have various email addresses.

That's me as well, to the last detail. big grin

I upgraded. It was slow but initially no problems. However, 2 weeks later, I am unable to scan with my Cannon printer. I can print normally, but NO SCANS. This was not a problem in the beginning. What happened?

At a guess, the new OS thinks printing is ubiquitous, scanning is optional. Check your device driver. You may have to delete the new Windows supplied one and replace it with the OEM driver/s on the CD or DvD that came with the Cannon printer.

Before you do anything, remember to first set a restore point - that way if things go further south you can at least get back to being able to print something.

If that's not it, then sorreee!

Probably means that your scanner hasn't yet figured out the drivers for Windows 10. My printer seems to work just fine with Windows 10 but I haven't tried connecting my scanner to my upgraded laptop. I still use it with my Windows 7 desktop machine. With all the time they have had testing Windows 10 it is surprising companies haven't had the updated drivers available from day 1.

Resurrecting this old thread to warn those on Win 7 or 8.x, particularly those with metered internet connections or SSD drives that Win 10 is being pushed into your devices whether you chose to upgrade or not:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2015/09/12/microsoft-confirms-windows-10-now-forced-onto-windows-7-and-windows-8/

To prevent this from happening users have to manually remove a good number of automatic windows updates, as detailed on this article:

http://techne.alaya.net/?p=12499

There are also some good technical info on the same page to block data snooping from MS to a good extent.

Thanks for the heads up. I recently had to buy a new laptop and the model I got had windows 7 pro and a free update to 8. I wont do the update to 8 but still like having the option. I definitely wont do the upgrade to 10 anytime soon.

I tell ya, Microsoft and to some extent Apple are installing Trojans nowadays. You should be able to choose what to download and not download onto your own computer. Worse yet, when they do this against your permission, in secret and make it by default a hidden file. There should be a class action lawsuit against these developers.

Which, in their experience isn't going to happen, since anyone not going along for the ride won't have ticked the box.

I upgraded pretty early on and so have no been running it for several weeks, which I now regret. I should have given it some time for them to roll it out properly and fix the bugs.

And buggy it is - shut down issues abound and sometimes the desktop won't even load. Yesterday I had a new issue - everything seemed to load ok but I couldn't actually open any folders.

Not really a fan of the interface either.

Can't be arsed to revert back but do regret upgrading as soon as a I did.

So, I have been following this conversation for a while now. *Don't mind me...I kinda of lurk on/off the FSM board. Depends on my work load and wot not.

But I've been receiving (since August?) this little "tattletale" icon encouraging me to upgrade to Windows 10. However, being the pessimistic person I am, I have refrained from doing so.

Anyways, so I'm talking with my friend Jose today about it. (*He's a sysadmin with a hearty Linux/Unix background.) And like Paul and et al., he eventually rolled back due to all the bugs and etc. that have not been fixed. *Unlike some of us, he's in a fortunate place where he simply downloaded/installed W10 on a personal computer out of sheer curiosity. He did say, however, that his workplace is now pushing toward it, even though most employers are still satisfied using Windows 7 or 8 on a universal basis. So sooner or later, I think we'll be herded toward it whether we like it or not. Esp. with it now being incorporated into OS updates.

As for social media...is it "Solium" (forgive me if mistaken!) who was talking about it? I canceled my Facebook account last year, and I have never done Twitter or anything else before or after. Life is good. No need for anything else except my usual travels thru the latest tech gossip. Technology is great...but life in it self...even more so smile

Win 7 to Win 10: No effort, no problems, an hour's download, and now I hardly notice the difference. Quite a contrast with some past transitions!

Thankfully the download doesn't work if you don't have enough space on your main hard drive for Windows 10 to download, which is the case for mine smile Most of my stuff is on secondary drives so I don't worry about making tons of free space. But that is pretty crazy. Yes I had to delete quite a few things before doing the upgrade on my main drive.

Also good to see Holly posting something here. Been missing those comments on Facebook.

I hate Windows 8.1

But, like Mr Burns in The Simpsons, it's working at the moment because all the bugs are balanced. In reality we've disabled every feature of W8.1 that it's possible to disable. It took a few months.

I'm scared to fuck that up by upgrading to 10, even though it looks nicer and better than 8.1.

I'll be looking into this, since MS just announced on my computer that they will automatically update my computer to W10 on 5/25/16 at 11 a.m., unless I cancel (I never even requested it!). Whatta buncha greedheads....

Thanks, Drawgoon.

Ditto. I hope this stops them, if they do try it after I cancelled.

Upgraded to 10. Much better than the abominations that are 8 and 8.1.

I upgraded not long ago. Great (great...) trepidation about the outcome, given the cataclysmic aftermath of previous OS migrations. I was unable to instigate the install until I allowed Win7 the unfettered opportunity to update itself for about 24 hours. Afterwards the system apparently had what it needed to do the deed.

Much to my surprise the OS change was only like installing a patch. Everything remained as it was, everything still worked (works). Unheard of! I salute MS for this. The only thing that needed attention was the disabling of various auto-reporting features; referenced a video (of many available) showing what could be slain (disabled).

As a gamer I had to enable DirectX12 (11?...). Also nice to at least for a considerable time not have to worry about critical updates ceasing.

Anyway, painless. And free. Hopefully this is the wave of the Future for operating software.
