While the dialogue was recorded mono and panned left/center/right in post, the score was recorded in discrete three-channel full-coat magnetic stereo. It's a knockout!

It's one of the few surviving stereophonic masters from that breakthrough year: http://www.3dfilmarchive.com/the-first-year-of-stereophonic-sound

Best Buy has begun shipping copies of IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE. Get ready to see the film looking better in 3-D than it did in 1953. Also, be sure to alert your neighbors that you are listening to a VERY dynamic stereophonic track so they aren't startled by the explosions.

If you haven't ordered your copy, here's the link: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/it-came-from-outer-space-blu-ray-3d/5622264.p?id=3622777&skuId=5622264

Just popped in the disc to preview it, and have some criticisms watching the 2-D version. I thought I read they had eliminated the mirror apparatus you see when the ship comes at the camera, but it's still visible. Was it fixed only for the 3-D version?
I dunno if this happens elsewhere, but when Carlson is talking to the two imposters in town, the volume drops drastically when they are behind the camera. Happens on the dvd audio, but not so prominent. Maybe you have to have a 5.1 audio system to get the effect, but it's too low on a stereo TV.

The mirror reflection has not been removed.

The audio needs to be played in discrete 3.0 to get the original 1953 mix.

The dvd has 3-channel audio, but it doesnt drop so much. And it doesnt drop when Carlson is behind us, only when the imposters are, so I guess the audio suggests his POV.
I think the restorers are taking "home theater" too literally - some of us only have a home TV.

The DVD is a heavily-modified and compressed mix created in the 1990's. What you have on the Blu-ray - for the first time in 63 years - is the original three channel stereophonic mix as heard theatrically in 1953.

Please see this article for more information: http://www.3dfilmarchive.com/it-s-in-the-mix

The mirror reflection has been there from day #1. Digitally removing or altering original special effects is not something we at the 3-D Film Archive take lightly.

You are correct about the original DVDs 3 channel audio having a flat dynamic range - It is VERY compressed and had the center channel significantly boosted as well, which degrades much of the original 3 channel (L/C/R) directional dialog. High frequency response on the DVD is also almost non-existent. This is a marked contrast to the original 3 channel magnetic masters originally heard in 1953 and is now accurately reproduced on the new 3D/2D bluray.

Per the article Bob has already linked to, if your home TV speakers are insufficient for the original theatrical mix, it is highly recommended to use one of the dynamic range audio compression settings found in either your TV and/or bluray player.

Yes, I did read that "in the mix" article. But there's a review (above) which tries to explain it's usage-
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/community/threads/it-came-from-outer-space-the-htf-3d-addict-review.349416/
"The best way to describe the mix is as follows...when the camera is focused on a single person, dialogue remains squarely in the center channel with the left and rights providing ambient sound. As the camera shifts to exchanges involving several individuals, that dialogue is expanded across the three front channels..."

This is perfectly understandable for on-screen actors like the Sheriff's office with the wife & girlfriend, but not for the scene I mentioned. Carlson is always audible during the whole shot-reverse shot scene, but the imposters are lower when off screen - I suppose to suggest they are behind the audience. But they are lower volume when sharing the screen with "normal" characters in other scenes so I'm not sure how that reflects any 3-D effect. I couldnt find any way to "dumb" down the audio on my HDTV or blu-player, hence my frustration. Wish there was an extra standard stereo downmix channel option.

People of all ages are enjoying our restoration of IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE. Here's a delightful review from Garry Don, an 8 year old fan of classic 3-D movies. He's even got the alien's eyeball!

Man, when they start "fixing" classic special effects that's when I say "no thank you".

Man, when they start "fixing" classic special effects that's when I say "no thank you".

What does this mean? Are there things that have been "fixed" in this transfer? I think I remember something about wires being removed.

Fox did that kind of thing with their restoration of THE ROBE. A knife is thrown into a tree and you can plainly see how it's on a wire. In the transfer on Blu-ray, the wire has been digitally removed.

I don't have a problem with this, I just wish I didn't know the wire is there in the first place. It's distracting to see the wire in the first place (as it is to see the wires holding up the models of the spaceships in WAR OF THE WORLDS, for another example), so whatever distraction NOT seeing the wires is... well, for me, they both kind of cancel each other out.

I have a favorite western called WILL PENNY. There's a scene in it where Bern Dern throws a knife into Charlton Heston's shoulder. You can plainly see the knife is on a wire. It's a huge distraction that takes you out of the moment. I'd be for the digital removing of it when the movie comes to Blu-ray. But, for me, I'd still know that it once was there, so it really doesn't make any difference, but I'd still buy the Blu-ray, as I'm going to do with this Blu-ray.
