The Treasure of the Sierra Madre 10/10 - Huston & Bogart, enough said.

"Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!"

Love, love, LOVE that film!

"Scuse me, but could you help a fellow American who's down on his luck?"

Films don't get too much better than that one.

As good as everyone is in that movie, director/writer Huston's father Walter steals the show with his deserved academy award winning performance. His dirt dance is a classic film moment!

THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY (Ken Loach) - 5/10.

A long two hours. Tasted terribly much like a 1970s/1980s British afternoon TV series. But at least I learned a bit (mainly from the booklet).

TOMBSTONE The two-disc DVD. A fantastic looking transfer of a great western, with a career best performance from Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday 9/10 I also liked KISS KISS BANG BANK, also with Val Kilmer (on Sky+), I need to see it again to tie up a few plot points 7/10.

ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (2004)

6.5/10

Carrey was quite good in this and Kate Winslet does a swell "American" accent. The film started out quite serious and bleak then got a bit silly later on. Kirsten Dunst is no great actress and how the hell she was tagged to play Mary Jane Watson is still beyond me; she's just sub-par in the looks department, IMO.

Over the weekend:

Iron Man -- 8 -- a total blast that only disappointed me in the final 1/2 hour. The bluray is outstanding.

Twilight -- 8 -- surprised me that I liked it so much. The underscore is quite good I thought.

In Search of the Castaways -- the old Disney chestnut which was my favorite film as a kid (I saw it 10 times in one week by sitting through every showing at our local theater). Hugely disappointing to me now as an adult although I can appreciate what I latched onto as a kid -- and some of the background mattes and special fx by Ellenshaw are quite lovely (some are a bit clunky, too). For old times sake I'll give it a 7.

Life in a Metro -- an Indian film about couples and problems in modern India -- instead of flat out musical numbers the film features a group of street musicians who pop up now and then to sing songs commenting on the narrative. Each character pays for moral transgressions, marriages remain intact, and true love doesn't always conquer all. Not exactly fun, but still interesting. I'm trying to see a lot of Indian cinema these days. I'd give it a 5.

The Proposal (2009) - 8/10

It's been awhile since I've seen a romantic-comedy that I liked, but I really liked this one. Despite a slow start and the standard set up (fake a marriage to prevent deportation), I thought it worked because Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds had good chemistry, and there was a bit more to the story, like unresolved tensions between Reynold's character and his father (Craig T. Nelson), and some other things. To my surprise, Betty White even wasn't as annoying as she seems to have been in recent years. Overall, nothing special, but I thought it was a nice enough little movie.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968): 9/10

The "Beyond The Infinite" chapter loses me somewhat, but man, does this movie look gorgeous on Blu-Ray. eek

PUBLIC ENEMIES (2009) – 5/10.

What's the point of this movie?

To criticize police brutality? To show a criminal's joy of life? To just re-tell a (hi)story?

4-movie Disaster Pack - Crash Landing, Nature Unleashed: Avalanche, Earthquake, Fire - I thought I knew what bad acting was until I started watching these horrible films - BTW, these aren't classic films, they're recent. Effects are laughable and the dialogue very boring and pointless to the story. I was only able to watch about 15 minutes of each (while fast-forwarding) before they just became too much to bear. $5 at Ralph's. Seriously overpriced - 1

Catagory 7: The End of the World - I get suckered into these crappy movies because I love disaster flicks. I figured Randy Quaid's involvement might mean it's actually somewhat good. Nope. I couldn't finish it - 3

Ice Spiders - Absolutely as laughable (in a bad way) as the above-films, and just about as useless and boring - 2

Dogtown and the Z-Boyz - Although I owned a skateboard as a kid, I never got into it, as I took to BMX'ing. I found this DVD about five years ago and it's one I regularly watch (probably bi-monthly), as it makes me feel like I'm reliving my youth and it embodies the vibe and feel of what I always thought Southern California was back in the 70's. Beautifully narrated by Sean Penn, great video footage and stills of that era, and simply an amazing array of classic songs to get your adrenaline flowing and make you reflect somberly on what might have been. You really feel for some of those guys. The motion picture, "The Lords of Dogtown," I thought totally sucked. Again, not a fan of skateboarding at all (and never really listened to many of the groups/songs that are used in this film) yet this makes my Top Ten Favorite DVD's list - 10

Look Back in Anger (1959) 7/10

Depressing but extremely well acted film starring Richard Burton, Claire Bloom, Mary Ure and Edith Evans. Burton is the quintessential angry young man who makes life miserable for everyone around him. The cinematography is equally effective, showing lower-class London at its grimy worst. There is one line that made me laugh: "You look like a photo in a laxative advert -- before."

Hans Christian Andersen - haven't seen it in years, lamented the fact the oldies but goodies don't get an airing on UK network TV much so my wife got the DVD yesterday. 8/10 - bet they wouldn't do a remake with the long ballet sequences nowadays! Lovely Loesser words and music.

Then I made the mistake of reading up about the real Andersen (the Danny Kaye-starrer being 'a fairy tale about the author of fairy tales' as the scene setting credit says on screen at the start) - didn't know he swung both ways. When my wife and I sat down to watch the biopic De Lovely on DVD a few years ago, she turned it off when the narrative revealed Porter was bisexual and gave the DVD to a charity shop.
