I enjoy most of Giacchino's film scores, but have yet to dip into any of his TV stuff, specifically Lost. My question is which season to begin with? I know logic dictates working chronologically through them, but I'd prefer to go for the most thematically rich season first, in case it's not my cup of tea.

Start with Season 1. It lays a lot of ground work for the rest. The one important thing missing is the End Title for some bizarre reason.

My playlist consists of the first season CD and the 2nd disc of the Final Episodes CD with about a dozen tracks or more from various seasons in between.

Indeed.

Ditto. I have them all, but my most-listened to is the final 2-CD set issued by Varese.

If you're looking for the most thematically rich of all ten CDs available, start with the very last disc on "The FInal Episodes" set. The episode score to "The End" features most of Giacchino's amazingly thematic work for the six years of Lost. This is his Star Wars trilogy or Lord of the Rings... I would put his two dozen character themes/motifs from Lost up against the best film music of the past 20 years.

After taking in the score to the final episode, go back and start with the first disc. Of course it GREATLY helps to power through a full watch of the show so you can have some context for the music and themes.

I think that's such a tough question to answer. My favorite is probably Season 2's music followed by Season 4 or 6...but as far as where to start? To quote Negan: "I simply cannot decide."

I guess I'd say actually start with Season 1 and just go from there. You'll probably love it and just try to move forward and you'll likely be rewarded for your efforts...

If you want to make your experience even more enriching from a thematic standpoint, here's a handy resource:

The one I always find myself going back to is Season 1's and that's where you should start.

Not for me. I thought the show was so awful that it ruins the music. The only way I could enjoy the music would be if I did not know what it was.

This. 'Nuff said. There was a time when I had a Lost music obsession, and once that boiling pot cooled to a simmer, this is what was left on the stove.

The music of Lost is really incredible. I'd suggest starting with the first season, and, if you like it, continuing from there.

I agree with some of the other posters that the themes build and build, and the final disc of season 6 is sort of his magnum opus. (If you watched Battlestar Galactica, Bear McCreary did a similar thing with the final episode of that series, which is like a musical capstone.)

Enjoy!

I found the season three soundtrack (disc #1) to offer the most varied and interesting overall Lost album presentation.

I can't imagine any production being so bad that it winds up ruining its music by association. If that was the case all our collections would be a lot smaller.

There are several scores that I will never be able to listen to, because they are associated with a film or TV show that sucked. If I'm missing out, whatevs, it's my loss. And I don't care about having a "collection," I'm into listening to music.

Season 1 is a must, it's where many of the themes heard throughout the series begin and you need to hear the initial version. After that, I find that the albums for Seasons 4, 5 and 6 are the ones I return most. The special "Final Episodes" 2-disc set is, as others have noted, a really highlight, containing some of the best thematic material Giacchino composed for the show and several new themes only heard on this set.

Wholeheartedly disagree. In Season 6, the new theme composed for Richard is stunning and only heard in one episode, plus there is all those new melodies in the final episode underscoring that special place on the island, again heard only in that episode.
