Captain Phillips is director Paul Greengrass's multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is — through Greengrass’s distinctive lens — simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award® winner Tom Hanks), and his Somali counterpart, Muse (Barkhad Abdi). Set on an incontrovertible collision course off the coast of Somalia, both men will find themselves paying the human toll for economic forces outside of their control. The film is directed by Academy Award® nominee Paul Greengrass, from a screenplay by Billy Ray based upon the book, A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty. The film is produced by Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, and Michael De Luca.
For one of his biggest scores to date, composer Henry Jackman takes his music to the high seas for this epic adventure.
Columbia Pictures will open CAPTAIN?PHILLIPS?on over 3000 screens on October 11.

Just saw this. Amazing film, but I agree, I was taken out of the film completely by the tracking of "The End" from the finale of United 93 for the ENTIRE duration of the finale of this film. While I'm obviously probably 1 in a million who noticed this, it was still disappointing.
Of course probably 1/4 of the third Bourne film was tracked with score from the first two, so it's not exactly new for a Greengrass film. However I always assumed that was just because that film was so rushed to meet its release date.
This score owes a great debt to Powell. The main theme throughout the Captain Phillips score (a two note repeated motif) is also borrowed from Powell's United 93 score.
The film is brilliant, but I hope Powell is able to rejoin Greengrass soon.

it was music by Jackman following temp score?
I could have sworn music from other Powell/Greengrass work's was used but I figured it was no big deal since it was from Universal who owns the rights and Powell being Greengrass' friend.

"The End", the final cue from United 93, is used for the finale of this film and credited in the end titles.
No other existing cues are credited, so that would mean all the instances of the United 93 theme appearing at other points in the film are Jackman following the temp score.
A pity Powell wasn't available to score this with original music.
Also, this film is Sony, not Universal. However I don't think that matters very much. Anyone can use music from old movies as long as they pay the required fee.

Saw this film last night.
I thought if they could have shaved 15-20 minutes from the run-time, it would have been possibly my 'best film of the year' but it did sag a bit at times and that slightly ruined things for me.
The score was effective but boringly predictable, like most scores these days (I wasn't familiar with the United 93 score so didn't suffer any distractions).
The final 20 minutes featured just about the best acting I've seen from an actor in ages.
Tom Hanks for another Oscar? I would say deservedly so.
