I never understood why people fell for that rumor. If he was going to score part 3 (which he most definitely was not ever involved) then he would have used the damn Carol-Anne theme from the other films!

The logic baffles me, whoever started that silly rumor.

That doesn't make sense. In Poltergeist II he also used another main theme and in case he had to recycle his compositions from Poltergeist III for The Haunting, he could just take out Carol Anne's Theme.

I still don't believe in that rumor.

Yeah but that theme was for Taylor and “The Power” as they were new, central elements.

He didn’t write a different lullaby theme as he did in The Haunting.

As Carol-Anne was the central character in part 3, he would have most certainly continued to quote her theme.

Of course, he probably would have devised a few new themes perhaps for the building itself and perhaps the slimy psychiatrist and he would have brought back the preacher’s theme I assume.

That's true, although I could believe Goldsmith rewriting his original lullaby as the one in The Haunting and starting a fresh, had he actually been involved with Poltergeist III.

The instrumentation and approach are certainly on the same wave length. Goldsmith also did it with Omen III and in all honesty I thought that was a much better theme than the original theme, which already was a masterful work.

Watched the movie, only registered the score. This is obviously a must have.

Excellent score, superbly re-released by Varese.

Heck yeah Peter, it's in my queue! The movie was actually worth watching to me because I really liked the score.

The hunt? This was the most recent Goldsmith expansion Varese released, and it's still readily available (albeit just a single disc...what's this about a two disc edition?)

I've been wondering if that was a kind of cute red herring. Of course, I searched all over for a two disc lol! No harm done. I love hunting anyway.

Forgive me if it's been mentioned already, but can anyone please provide the details as to how the film version and the album version of "Finally Home" differ from one another?

Normally I could figure it out myself but there seem like a lot of differences. I could be wrong. If anyone could provide details on how and where they're different - i.e. longer/shorter/edited sections in one version or the other, sections present in one version and completely absent in the other, a certain section played on piano in one version vs. strings in the other, sound quality/mixing differences, and so on. The more detailed (i.e. the section from 3:05-3:30 is yada yada) the better, I beg of you!

There seem to be quite a few differences in just the first 1:30 alone. Sorry, not trying to be lazy, but was hoping that someone out there more familiar with the Varese Deluxe edition was already in the know and might be able to help out!

Thanks!

It's a completely different cue in effect. The length (the film version takes the film all the way to the credits), the strength (the film version is a lot less powerful). Either the whole scene was changed and Goldsmith rescored to fit, or he felt a more direct version was needed for the album. It's very likely the former (similar to the situation at the end of Star Trek: Insurrection)

How did I miss this rather hilarious thread? smile

True story: When Varese put out The Haunting I took my copy home and played it and hated it. HATED it. And I began to think it was the sequencing that was making me hate it. So, I found the DAT of the sessions, made a CD copy and put everything in cue order and so I've been listening to it properly all these years and it's a whole new ballgame when it's in show order. I cannot believe Jerry thought his sequencing was good, but there's no accounting for these things.

This is verrrry interestink, as I haven't picked up The Haunting yet (the movie was kind of meh imo, despite the large budget).

I don't like it either way it's been released!
It's such a sub-standard score to my ears.
I think I transferred about 4 cues to a mp3 play list from the original CD issue and those same 4 cues were the only thing that stood out on the expanded edition.
One of Goldsmith's most uninspired efforts ever.

I too rarely played the original Varese album. It just never clicked with me. The new, expanded version helped me hear it in a whole new way. It’s a much better listening experience now. Fantastic score. It’s a shame the movie was rather limp.

The movie had SO much going for it in terms of star power. To this day I have no idea who first approved such a monstrously clichéd story, and for so much money.

I haven't had a chance to really sample Haunting yet, but JG has become big news for me, so getting this is inevitable.
