My copy of the Varese version arrived today! (Well, it arrived on either Friday or Saturday, but I didn't check the mail until today).

Varese did a good thing and included a bonus signed booklet PLUS a shrinkwrapped copy of the full set with its own booklet inside. Score!

At first glance the extra booklet is really no big deal. Doesn't seem to be any additional information we didn't already know in it.

There's a full page note from Giacchino but its just kind of stock fluff about how cool it was writing the score before they filmed the movie, etc.

I'll try to whip up some comparison pics tomorrow!

The Varese arrived today, signed by MG. My order number was 125, so thanks to Varese and MG for signing the extra orders that came in after the announced 100.

I'm really enjoying the score, whereas MG's action music never really clicked with me ( always felt his dramatic and big themed work were his strong suit ), here the action music really works. Not as mannered Williams' space action or as balls out brutal as Goldsmith, but maybe the method used of writing the score before seeing the film worked best. This is big, thematic stuff and very enjoyable.

Glad to hear the Varese booklet is really no big deal. I almost ordered a copy, but I already had the UK Sony version on order (received it almost a month ago) and could not be happier.

Unfortunately, despite ordering an autographed copy - I did not receive one. I would suggest Varese not sell them separately if they will be unable to fullfill those orders. Sent an email... but I doubt they'll have extras laying around.

Apart from the booklet, is the artwork different between the Sony and Varese release ?

The front covers are identical.

The back covers are basically identical, but with Varese logos instead of Sony, and credit for Robert Townson.

The spines are obviously different

Very oddly, Eddie Redmayne has a different facial expression on the two different back booklet covers

Inside the booklets there are lots of differences, but only one page of extra text really.

I'll post pics in a little bit, I finally took them today

Thanks for this Jason, very appreciated ! Curious to see how it looks. Oh, and what about what's printed on the CDs themselves ?

I haven't taken the shrinkwrap off the Varese version yet, so I can't answer that.

I was very happy when the package arrived to see that Varese provided an extra signed booklet IN ADDITION TO a fully shrinkwrapped copy of the OST. Sometimes when you get signed copies, the shrinkwrap is removed and the only cover you get is signed. I like when the signed cover is a true bonus.

I couldn't agree more with you !

Received this yesterday and also got one of the signed booklets. Haven't had a chance to listen to the whole thing yet but the couple of pieces I have heard are phenomenally good.

As an aside, that was one of the strangest packages I've ever gotten from anyone. The box arrived by U.S. mail and was completely intact and uncompromised. The interior was well-packed with bubble wrap and heavy kraft paper.

All three CD cases are damaged though. Damndest thing...the hinges on the Jupiter Ascending disc are broken and one of the flanges on the two-CD holder is broken. The other two CDs from John Debney and Gary Yershon...one of them the CD case has both hinges broken and the other all the interior 'teeth' that hold the CD in place came out when I lifted the CD out.

Easily replaced in almost all cases (no pun intended) but just weird.

Except for the small Varese logo, they're pretty much the same.

This is a terrific, terrific score. The best I've heard from Giacchino since at least John Carter if not before. I'm absolutely in love with it.

Many thanks to Varese (and the other labels) for making this such a generous release of two discs instead of a single one.

Here you go folks: SONY vs VARESE!

I just realized the Varese version lists the track times on the back while the Sony one doesn't!
