Got in contact w Varese, they're sending a signed booklet Listened to it last night... yeah lots of good stuff. Very interesting they had him compose music ahead of time.
Wow you guys, this score is beyond amazing! I felt shivers, I had sweaty palms, felt lots of emotions, while listening to this music. And I have only heard Disc 1 so far ...
What a fantastic soundtrack! I haven't seen the movie yet. I bought the CD based on the strengths of the composer and the subject matter of the movie; I figured the music would deliver the goods (epic sci fi scores always do it for me). And it totally does!
I am curious now if perhaps someday we will get to hear all 80 mins of the London recordings made prior to the movie score sessions themselves? It's all quite brilliant.

Yes 68 minutes is not 80, but I think he is just mis-remembering the figure. The only additional music you hear in the film not on the OST all sounds like specifically-written-to-picture material to me.
I've also just noticed that the list of LA players doesn't include any brass.
Are you saying the Sony and Varese booklets both are screwed up and neglect to mention some players that should be there; Or are you suggesting that during the LA sessions they didn't record any brass?

I gave it another chance. I really want to like it. I don't want to make a fuss on what my background in music is, but as a matter of fact I have an expertise.
But if I do or not,
there is only a couple of well composed moments on this CD. Simple is not catchy. Giacchino music needs more rhythmic diversity, it is all the same note durations, or long note and short notes, not even a dotted value somewhere. It is all like a children song. Which can by charming. But all the time? In every theme and every counterpoint. And the counterpoint. This is so clumsy. His two part writing above a harmonic grounding is really so clumsy in this one, noodling nowhere, like someone (inexperienced) improvising with two fingers. Then the ostinato-based music, copy-and-paste all the time, every bar is the same. Just some diversity here would be a delight. The rhythm with some variation here, some other values, when it is repeated 1o times. It is so incredibly uninspired and generic. An app can write better ostinato-based music.
The movements at the beginning are a joke. Really. There is like less than a minute of musical substance in there. Repeated with slightly different voicings, orchestrations. The same four bars again and a again. Even more a musical morendo than the underscore. And there are a lot of clumsy part-progressions, in particular in the outer parts.
Very disappointed.
Ok, to each his own, and it is a matter of taste to a degree.
But I think there are really profund flaws here in terms of craftmanship. Well, depends on the standards. For today's Hollywood scoring it is eenough.
Sorry for the negativity, can't find anything positive here.
I've just received my copy from Varese (standard edition, ordered a week ago)... and what a surprise, a signed booklet with it !!!! Very happy right now !

Agreed on both points. Although I liked the listen – and I assume, knowing Giacchino, that the music will be effective in the film – the music is both childish and repetitive. Or rather: amateurishly unvaried. Both musically and narratively.
But again, it works well in the background and thus is perfect writing music. I did a lot of work today :-D. Enjoyable stuff, but nothing more.
