Re: "But some CDs do exist that people truly covet and yet they cannot find. Or maybe they [can] find, but cannot afford. Do you have such a Holy Grail?"

So the original post here was about holy grails that HAVE been released but which we either cannot find or cannot afford? I've bought (or ordered) all of mine, which include:

Bill Conti: An Unmarried Woman
Bill Conti: Slow Dancing In The Big City
Max Steiner: A Summer Place
Max Steiner: Parrish
Max Steiner: Rome Adventure

And now:
Dave Grusin: Heaven Can Wait

But I bought them as they became available, so, for me, they are EX-holy grails. But I think that many here (except Justin Boggan and a few others) are still posting UNAVAILABLE holy grails.

I can't think of any of my grails released that I do not own, as I've chased the grails I wanted over the years - some of the more hard to find included Yong Scherlock Holmes and King Kong Lives.

Other grails I purchased over the years:

Probably the first rerelease that I thought was a miracle was the Star Wars 4cd box set. Return Of The Jedi was one of my most wanted grails, and even being incomplete that release was great (I still remember the excitement of picking it in December 93, close to my birthday, and listening to tracks like Luke and Vader Final Duel from ROTJ and Loosing a Hand from ESB)

Of those earlier grails I also have fond memories of Intrada's
Rambo III
Poltergeist II (now definitive with Kritzerland)

The Living Daylights

Rhino's
Ben Hur
Poltergeist (now definitive with FSM)

And in more recent years lots and lots of grails
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Indiana Jones Box (far from perfect but already a big improvement on the albums), Star Trek I, II, III, V, Alien, Aliens, Alien Resurrection, Conan, Conan The Destroyer (rerecording), Superman blue box, Vertigo (complete Conlon recording), expanded James Bonds, Jaws (waiting for a definitive edition from Intrada), Heavy Metal, Godzilla, Young Sherlock Holmes (Intrada promo), Friday The 13th and lots of others

Still waiting for:
Jaws (all), Psycho II and III, Airport (all), Fright Night Part II, Robocop 3, Outbreak, Alien3, The Abyss...

Used to be :

The Bride of Frankenstein
Jason and the Argonauts

Then they came out and in the case of the second, possibly the greatest ever rerecording. SO close to the original, except for that one little cue which for some reason is twice the speed it should be to my ears.

Will get Batman and Robin if it comes, for completeness.

Doctor Who and the Daleks and Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 AD were Holy Grails and they came out (well, one and a half).

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly expanded was another, and that's in the collection.

So there's not much left apart from any new Doctor Who tv soundtracks, and thankfully they come along shortly after each series, so I'm pretty contented.

Ooh, and there was The Prisoner tv soundtrack, and we got many releases of that. I didn't touch the ones with dialogue!

And an obscure eighties UK junior sf series called The Tripods with (orchestral style electronic) music by Ken Freeman who aided Jeff Wayne on his 70s War of the Worlds musical album. And even that came out many years after the fact, along with seperately released entertaining remixes of the main tracks.

I can't think of any existing grails I don't already own, only those who aren't released yet. And in the last couple of years my grail want list has slimmed down considerably.

On the top of my head the holy grail I missed was "Joe vs the Volcano". Never knew it existed until years later.

Another would be "Eye of the Needle". But Varese rectified that over sight with a reissue. "Caravans" was another, but I was able to purchased a used copy from a FSM member.
