Is Die Hard a Christmas movie? Some would say yes, others no.

I say it is. The story doesn't work without Christmas. it's a major plot point. It permeates throughout the film from the situation, all through the references, the music, and so on. It's swimming in Christmas. It's as much of a "Christmas Movie" as any of the Christmas themed romance films that play during the holidays. It's as much a "Christmas Movie" as It's a Wonderful Life. They aren't "about" Christmas but use the holiday in their stories.

Why ISN'T Die Hard a Christmas movie? Because it's an action/heist flick? Bullshit.

Because it was released in July? Miracle on 34th Street was released in June of 1947.

Die Hard is a Christmas movie.

Plus his wife’s name is Holly. Of course it’s a Christmas movie.

It's a Christmas movie like Pizza is a breakfast food. If that's what you want that's cool.

Claus. The one man everyone knows, and no one can catch up to.
Claus. His reindeer reach speeds the cops only dream of.
Claus. The ultimate cat UN-burglar!

I seem to recall a touch of (source) Xmas music in THE WAR OF THE ROSES.

And it's nowhere near a Christmas movie!

The robbery at Gimbels takes place on Christmas eve or a day or two before.

Two of my favorites both involve "Jingle Bells".

In THOSE DARING YOUNG MEN IN THEIR JAUNTY JALOPIES (MONTE CARLO OR BUST for those of you across the Pond), has the delightful cue, "Xmas it Ain't" interpolating "Jungle Bells".

Nino Rota's LA DOLCE VITA has a zippy cue, "Can Can-Jingle Bells" that even includes some lyrics with a decidedly Italian pronunciation in a very Rota arrangement.

I agree. And yet I don't think Gremlins is a Christmas movie. Weird, huh?

I am astonished that there are people who like "Do You Know How Christmas Trees are Grown?" but I've run into it more and more over the years. Yikes.

My least favorite: "Do You Know How Christmas Trees Are Grown?" John Barry OHMSS What was he thinking? Does anyone else here think it was a joke?

A joke? No. A perfect piece of music for the scenes in the film? Yes ...

... and a highly enjoyable Christmas song of which I never tire.

I acknowledge that as a teenager when I first purchased the album I wasn't too taken but the song has matured with me over the years and I think it's a lovely track.

Mitch

I very much agree with you. OHMSS is the BEST Bond score ever written, and the songs therein are wonderful.

From the soundtrack of Sylvester Stallone's 2000 remake of GET CARTER.

It was originally released in July so it's obviously not a Christmas movie.
