zoob, there are a few interviews around inside the compo. I've just seen a few, and in one of them, Norm says that for the original act (which pre-dates BOBBY DEERFELD, I imagine) he got Feti Kopez (?) to adapt an old Turkish lament. Don't know if that's the same music used in the film, but it might give you a lead.

It doesn't quite sound Turkish, but then again, Turkish music would've, like all Eastern European music (think Lizst and Hungary), had 'Germanicised' versions done in the 19th Century.
It sounds a bit Irish, but with 'English' embellishments.
Actually if you listen to 'The Bold Grenadier' (see 'Far from the Madding Crowd'), a trad. English folk-piece, this sounds like a varied and ornamented version of that.
I'm not saying it is that: folk tunes have a habit of sharing the same stable.
