Don't even give it any thought, Ed. When the person who said it has a heart as black as coal, what good would it do commenting. He'll just go on taking delight in the evil he thinks about other human beings.

The comment was ironic. See Allenby's debriefing of Lawrence scene in 'Lawrence of Arabia'. There is a point.

Giving a child an automatic weapon for recreational purposes (presumably, 'See how the bullets spray, honey' was the sentiment) .... Is THAT black-hearted I wonder?

And then we have touchy/feely downhome warm stuff about 'other human beings' and 'good heartedness'? As long as it's smothered in treacly downhome goodness, it's okay. Even if it's obscene.

Insane.

I've always thought that teaching young kids the rudiments of fencing would be more useful, y'know, face-to-face skill, GENUINE skill. As someone once said, 'Never give a sword to a man who can't dance'. The way of the warrior is always elegant in its ideal form. If you don't give a sword to a man who can't dance, what in God's name do you think you're doing giving an automatic SMP to a little girl?

She'll probably carry that guilt with her for life. I tell you what: let's give hand-held anti-aircraft missiles to idiots and see what they do with them. That'd be a hoot.

It certainly looks like the guns the girls are using in the Nightline video are much lower recoil than the one that killed the instructor. I think certain limited supervised instruction for children can be useful as long as any guns at home are locked away when not in use. The father of the 9 year old sharpshooter in the video seems to have the right approach, locking her guns away when she isn't practicing as a safety measure.
