If you had to choose between Last of the Mohicans 1992 soundtrack 17 tracks or Joe McNeely recreation 2000, which would you choose? Or would you choose both?

I suppose both if possible because the coverage and track listing of the McNeely recording is well worth it, along with fuller orchestrations of the Edelman material. But if you can only get one go with the OST, because the rerecording simply can't match the thunderous power of Jones's original. The Jones has a gorgeously wet sound that the McNeely, while perhaps more detailed, just doesn't capture with its relative dryness. I admit that's a personal preference because I'm so familiar with the OST. I know a few who prefer the McNeely for both legs of the score.

Classic example of loving what I heard first. I love the re-recording. It was years later before I heard the OST and I just can't adjust to it. Re-recording always for me.

I haven't played them for a long time, but I remember having a definite preference for the soundtrack album.
I base that on my favorite couple of tracks having an atmosphere and energy about them that isn't matched by the same cues on the re-recording.

I prefer the OST.

Either way, you're gonna get a truncated version of "Promontory".

I definitely prefer the original recording, still holding out for an expansion though!

Actually I never heard the re-recording. But this soundtrack is in my top ten of all time on my list. I am wishing for a true remaster and expanded some day.

It's funny - In all of the re-recordings of the main title I have (almost a dozen, from various compilation albums with various orchestras), the rhythm-setting percussion that opens the score before the grandiose introductory statement of the main theme is different.

Completely different.

I've always wondered why this is - I can't imagine that bit was denoted as 'ad Libitum' or whatever the term. Anyone else notice this?

I think it usually comes down to what you heard first & what you've got used to. I love the original soundtrack album & listen to it regularly (& if you don't mind s/hand, you can pick it up for next to nothing on Amazon). I'm sure the rerecording is very good, but I've no interest in it, as it would just sound wrong to me.

The OST is the way to go. Seems more close-miked somehow, and packs a bigger punch.

I like both.

The only disappointment in both recordings is the truncated "Promentory" track, which doesn't work for me at all.

I hope that in the not too distant future, some kind soundtrack producer will release a complete remastered soundtrack, with the full 8 minute Promentory track on, now that would be a soundtrack I'd snatch up in an instant.

My introduction to this score was a theme on the Silva album Cinema's Classic Romances - Main theme played by Kenneth Alwyn/CoPP and my love of that track pushed me to buy the Joel McNeely/RSNO re-recording.

And yes, the track Promontory is very much the highlight ... so much so that the score by Messrs. Jones and Edelman fails to interest me ... I'm waiting, waiting for that track (and its sibling The Kiss which whets the appetite). I've not heard the original arrangement of this track's source composition, The Gael by Dougie MacLean (from his 1990 album The Search) but I do like Trevor Jones's adaption.

Ah, a recording on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4v8pM7cHrT8 which I shall listen to once the current album finishes.

Perhaps it is this recording (I don't own the OST) but it rarely gets played these days (last: 07 Feb 14). As for the film, when I finally got around to watching one of the multiple TV broadcasts I was surprised: not what I'd expected.

The McNeely recording.

The OST suffers from a thinness that likely came from Mann's changing his mind about the type of score he wanted, leaving the composers little time to finish their work.

If you like the score and you can, get both. The Jones material tends to sound more powerful on the original soundtrack (there are exceptions), but the fuller orchestrations on the Edelman material and the sequencing make the McNeely recording well worthwhile.

I would say if you had to pick one, go with the OST, which is a bit more iconic, but this is a case where I like having both options. I was actually a bit surprised by how much I liked the McNeely recording when I listened to it.

I'd pick up an expanded edition of this score in a heartbeat.

Yes, that one gets my vote. Pending a complete issue of the full Score.

Listening to this in the audience gave me goosebumps - and it still does when I watch this clip again.

As for the CD choice, I would go with the re-recording. The strings on the OST always sound a bit too synthy for my taste.

It doesn’t sound that great though, does it? I’d love a proper complete album of this score for the film version of the main title and its extra flute embellishment alone. I’m not sure how someone would start assembling this as an proper album as Jones’ material appears to have been meddled with almost entirely by the filmmakers. Has there ever been any chatter from the labels about the possibilities for this?
