THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18

THE INTERVIEW---Sony Pictures announced it has canceled the premiere of its controversial comedy movie due to the email hacking scandal, “Sony Pictures has no further release plans for the film." The movie's plot involves the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. US intelligence sources said North Korea was "centrally involved" in the hacking.
Similarly, New Regency cancelled the Steve Carell movie PYONGYANG which is based on the graphic novel and is also set in North Korea.

JURASSIC WORLD---photo released of Chris Pratt and a raptor from the sequel which premiers on June 12, 2015.

JRR TOLKIEN---Peter Jackson commented on the possibility of more movies based on Tolkien books, "If I had to start tomorrow, I would say no, because I definitely would appreciate a break to clear my head and get my little New Zealand stories done, which is where my passion and my heart is heading now. But ask me in two or three years, and I’d probably say yes. It would be hard to see another filmmaker go into this world, because I certainly have an emotional ownership of it."

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS---Andy Serkis commented on rumors that he will play both a live-action character and a CGI charcter in the sequel, “No that's not true at all. I can say I only play one character." Asked if his character is live-action or CGI, he said, "I can't say a single thing about that. I'm sorry. These things will all come out in the fullness of time, I promise. The character …ye's been through some stuff."
Natalie Portman said co-starring in the Star Wars movies almost killed her career, "Star Wars had come out … and everyone thought I was a horrible actress. I was in the biggest-grossing movie of the decade, and no director wanted to work with me. Mike wrote a letter to Anthony Minghella and said, ‘Put her in COLD MOUNTAIN, I vouch for her.’ And then Anthony passed me on to Tom Tykwer, who passed me on to the Wachowskis."

MARVEL'S AGENT CARTER---ABC released a new poster for the two-hour premiere on January 6.

KUMIKO, THE TREASURE HUNTER---Rinko Kikuchi (BABEL, PACIFIC RIM) stars in this movie as a Japanese woman who thinks the movie FARGO is a documentary and travels to North Dakota to find the the suitcase of stolen money featured in the movie.

THE DAMNED---Legendary Pictures bought the movie rights to the upcoming supernatural novel by Andrew Pyper, whose earlier novel, THE DEMONOLOGIST, is being made into a movie by Robert Zemeckis.

Ohhhh...like when George Lucas wanted to make all those indie films after finishing the original Star Wars trilogy. Got it.

Like Latino, Powaqqatsi, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, etc. (not to mention studio movies that were nevertheless much lower-profile than Star Wars, such as Labyrinth, Howard the Duck, Tucker: The Man and His Dream, and so on)? Yeah, that was an interesting period for Lucasfilm. Or were you perhaps thinking of later?

(Not that George Lucas's statements about his intentions from years ago are particularly relevant to Peter Jackson's statements of his own intentions from today to begin with, but never mind that.)

(Oh, it's perhaps also worth noting that while he can still make humongous big-budget effects-laden intended blockbusters such as King Kong, his thoughts on doing more Tolkien adaptations are an equally moot point, since The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are the only books to which anyone outside the Tolkien estate had the film rights anyway, and the estate isn't keen to have any more movie adaptations done, so that's that for a good long while.)

I didn't know that Lucas wrote and directed all those films, Joe. Thanks for the correction.

Oh, I didn't say he did, Jim, but they are among the things he busied himself with between Star Wars trilogies, so I thought I'd mention them.

I mean, maybe it's a bit much, but since nobody feels too bad about crediting him with Howard the Duck and he had the same job on all those other movies that he did on that, I trust there's no issue with crediting him with those others... right?
