Why couldn't Nick Urata just do the whole movie?

Surprisingly charming! And the trailer looks fine, too. Despite the Sandler bashing, this could be one of those films that get buried beneath critical hate for the lead when it actually is a nice piece of work.

Surprisingly charming! And the trailer looks fine, too. Despite the Sandler bashing, this could be one of those films that get buried beneath critical hate for the lead when it actually is a nice piece of work. I saw the film when it came out, and for the first reel or so (yes, I'm old enough that I still think of films in terms of reels) I was thinking "Wow, this doesn't quite work, but it's not nearly as bad as the reviews said," but then after that opening section it truly became as bad as the reviews suggested. And I actually like Sandler - he can be quite good in films made by others, like Punch-Drunk Love, Spanglish and Men Women & Children, and I've really enjoyed some of his self-produced films like Happy Gilmore and You Don't Mess with the Zohan. Cobbler writer-director Tom McCarthy made one of this season's most acclaimed films, Spotlight (score by Howard Shore), and I have this fantasy of the Academy telling McCarthy "We think your movie is the best of the year but we can't give you an Oscar because you made The Cobbler."
