WEDNESDAY, MAY 20

STAR WARS---Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy commented on original characters appearing in future movies, "Don't worry: Boba Fett is a high priority among our list, please wait. But seeing how the Ewoks could return is a little harder to imagine. It is quite difficult to give the many stars of Star Wars their own stories on film." Reportedly, the second STAR WARS: ANTHOLOGY movie is about the origin of Boba Fett.
Also, co-writer Lawrence Kasdan (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, RETURN OF THE JEDI) commented on Billy Dee Williams having an uncredited cameo in THE FORCE AWAKENS, "Right now, there's no Lando Calrissian in this movie. But Lando I don't think is finished in any way, shape, or form."

STAR TREK BEYOND---co-writer/co-star Simon Pegg said the upcoming sequel won't return to Trek roots, "They [Paramount Pictures] had a script [by Robert Orci] for Star Trek that wasn't really working for them. I think the studio was worried that it might have been a little too Star Trek-y.
Avengers Assemble, which is a pretty nerdy, comic-book, supposedly niche thing, made $1.5 billion dollars. STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS made half a billion, which is still brilliant. But it means that, according to the studio, there's still $1 billion worth of box office that don't go and see Star Trek. And they want to know why.
People don't see it being a fun, brightly colored, Saturday night entertainment like the Avengers. [So they want to] make a western or a thriller or a heist movie, then populate that with Star Trek characters so it's more inclusive to an audience that might be a little bit reticent."
Also, Pegg had negative comments on the success of geekdom in movies and television, "Before STAR WARS, the films that were box-office hits were THE GODFATHER, TAXI DRIVER, BONNIE AND CLYDE and THE FRENCH CONNECTION – gritty, amoral art movies. Then suddenly the onus switched over to spectacle and everything changed.
Now, I don't know if that is a good thing. Obviously I'm very much a self-confessed fan of science-fiction and genre cinema. But part of me looks at society as it is now and just thinks we've been infantilised by our own taste. Now we're essentially all consuming very childish things – comic books, superheroes... Adults are watching this stuff, and taking it seriously.
It is a kind of dumbing down in a way. Because it's taking our focus away from real-world issues. Films used to be about challenging, emotional journeys or moral questions that might make you walk away and re-evaluate how you felt about... whatever.
Now we're walking out of the cinema really not thinking about anything, other than the fact that the Hulk just had a fight with a robot. But I sometimes feel like I miss grown-up things. And I honestly thought the other day that I'm gonna retire from geekdom. I've become the poster child for that generation, and it's not necessarily something I particularly want to be. I'd quite like to go off and do some serious acting."

JACK REACHER 2---director Edward Zwick (THE LAST SAMURAI, BLOOD DIAMOND) is in negotiations to reunite with Tom Cruise for the sequel based on the novel NEVER GO BACK in which Jack Reacher returns to his former Virginia military base where its female commander has been arrested, and he's charged with assault and fathering an illegitimate child.

USS INDIANAPOLIS: MEN OF COURAGE---Tom Sizemore (SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, BLACK HAWK DOWN) will co-star with Nicolas Cage in this World War II movie about the cruiser USS Indianapolis in which most of its crew survived after being sunk by a Japanese submarine but then many died to shark attacks and exposure. The cruiser's commander, Capt. Charles McVay, was court-martialed and committed suicide but was posthumously exonerated.

THE FLASH---executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said about Season 2, “While Rick won’t be a regular, FLASH is the kind of show between hardcore sci-fi and time travel that I wouldn’t be surprised if this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Eddie Thawne….On FLASH, you’ve never seen the last of anybody, no matter what happens to them.”

MARVEL STUDIOS---Chris Pratt said he's signed for two more GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY movies and two other Marvel movies. He said about replacing Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, "No one's called me."

THE STRAIN---Season 2 of the vampire plague series premieres on July 12.

11/22/63---TR Knight (GREY'S ANATOMY) will co-star with James Franco in this Hulu nine-part miniseries based on Stephen King's novel about John F. Kennedy's assassination.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES 2---a source said villain Krang will appear in the sequel via an extra-dimensional portal and will probably be CGI.

BAD SANTA 2---writer/director Doug Ellin (ENTOURAGE) said the sequel is underway with Billy Bob Thornton expected to return.

I AM WRATH---John Travolta, Christopher Meloni and Rebecca De Mornay star in this movie about an engineer who seeks revenge on the thugs who murdered his wife after the police fail to take action.

I was a huge fan of the first movie and gutted that McQuarrie wasn't available for the sequel. I have a begrudging adoration for The Last Samurai though, so I'm hoping this turns into something good...

Regarding Star Trek, yes lets make it more dumb ass pointless.
"OMG! There's a billion more we're not making!!!!"
Point is "Star Trek" isn't for everyone. At least their honest about it now...

Back when they did the original movies, this was the only thing I hoped to see. Despite the turtles' design, I still thought the latest one was ok and if they do have Krang I have a new sequel to look forward to. wink

So Paramount has decided they want Star Trek to be less like the property that has made them billions of dollars? Sounds really stupid. Making it even less Trek-y and more like Marvel makes it less relevant and less unique than ever, the expectation on ST 3 just dropped like a rock.

Historically the Star Trek franchise has never done as well as other properties in foreign markets. Maybe the idea of a unified people of various races exploring the universe is to odd of a concept for them. Japan, Russia, China, and other countries are still pretty homogenized societies.

Star Trek was never generic enough to make Star Wars or Avengers kinds of money. Though they are on their way, and I guess working to make it even more generic.

I thought this last Star Trek WAS "less like the Trek" we know.

Now they want to make it EVEN MORE like Star Wars?

Star Trek should not be like Star Wars.

Yes, as we have said before Trek is genetically a TV show, the movies have always been best efforts, and met with various levels of success. As far as movies the adjusted grosses of TMP and Voyage Home are two of the best, and those are a long way from Marvel movies, the best reviewed overall Wrath of Khan, and that is hardly an action movie by today's measure.

They have put themselves in this position with the insane budgets, Into Darkness $190 million, so now it has to become as palatable and generic as possible to make more money. If Paramount had any guts they would stop chasing the blockbuster hyper marvel trend and strip it down, make the budget around $50 million and have Nick Meyer, or someone else that understands the Star Trek genetics write a script.

Othewise I think that Simon Pegg's comments are really smart, and ironic, considering he is disdaining comic book blockbuster material, and Paramount is asking him to make Star Trek more comic book.

Yeah the actual title or property doesn't matter to them. Story, art, character, individuality doesn't matter to them.

It's all a numbers game. If we spend $200 million we should get back 1.5 Billion. They don't want to spend $50 million and make back $600 million. They just want to see billions rolling in. Money is their porn.

Yeah, 1 Billion is the new benchmark. If a blockbuster doesn't gross $1,000,000,000 worldwide, it's regarded as some sort of failure or only partially successful (like Man of Steel, which opened against two other blockbusters).

What's stopping you, Mr. Worst-Thing-About-The-Bad-Robot-Trek-Movies? Many, many actors on your level and above it subscribe to the "One for them, one for me" theorem, including several cast members of Marvel's The Avengers. Plus, you're a writer so write a serious movie as a vehicle for yourself. Basically, take the advice offered in the title of your current movie and Man Up. mad

All the great potential set up for Boba Fett in his extended cameo in The Empire Strikes Back has subsequently been thrown out of the window by Return of the Jedi and Attack of the Clones. Instead of the mysterious, cool, efficient bounty hunter that TESB set up, we actually know that Boba was a whiney little brat with an annoying voice, who grew up to be as inefficient and inept as his dad Jango (who, in the one film he's in, fails to assassinate Amidala on Corusant, fails to kill Obi Wan on Kamino, fails to stop Obi Wan from tracking him to Geonosis , fails to kill Mace Windu in the big battle and fails to keep his head on his shoulders too). And like his dad, the bumbling Boba dies a completely embaressing death, being accidentally struck by a blind Han Solo and then flying into a giant sand anus. The fact he lets out a high pitch, girly scream doesn't help either.

So, I have zero interest in seeing an entire movie devoted to him.

Likewise Lando, I'm afraid. As portrayed by Billy Dee Williams, I didn't find him "a charming rogue" but actually a somewhat creepy character. I'm delighted he isn't in Episode VII - after all the mere presecene of JJ Abrahms behind the camera gives me enough to worry about as it is.

Coulda sworn Attack of the Clones already covered that...

EDIT: Damned my not reading the whole thread first. Mike J already said that...

I love Simon Pegg, but those comments somehow accomplish the amazing feat of making me even less interested in Star Trek Beyond than I already was. Paramount's intentions for the franchise run counter to what this long-time fan would like to see. Mind you, I'm already of the opinion the last two movies irrevocably ruined this new Star Trek continuity anyway, so I had no interest in seeing this movie unless it retconned the hell out of those. Sadly it looks like I'm done watching new Star Trek movies forever, though I'll happily go see any of the first ten on the big screen again if given the chance (in fact a few weeks ago I just went to see Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan again theatrically for the first time in over twenty years, and it was glorious).

I'm up for new Star Wars movies, since I'm sure whatever other strengths or shortcomings they have, they won't have much trouble remembering they're Star Wars movies. I'd rather have someone other than J. J. Abrams directing (and more importantly co-writing) the next episode, but oh well.

For right now - JJ is only on Episode VII. Rian Johnson is doing Episode VIII and IX, I'm pretty sure.

They already took clichés from modern action films and dressed them up as Star Trek characters. That wasn't enough?

I really hope this one flops. Maybe then they'll stop putting out garbage labeled as Star Trek.

In any case, I never thought I'd find myself this uninterested in films from this series.

We really shouldn't pass judgment until we've seen what Burger King comes up with.

That's a weird comment. Avengers 2 was dimly lit and dull, with barely any color saturation. I didn't like that at all. The JJ Treks have been bright and colorful by comparison.

Good one. big grin

They did make some very nice drinking glasses for Trek 2009.

Ya know, the Rick Berman and produced Star Trek movies are looking better and better all the time. Even Nemesis is looking pretty nuanced, character rich and entertaining comparatively. At least they were about something. Right now I would love it if they brought Rick Berman and Nick Meyer back to make a Trek, of course they will not happen.
