I do not understand the idea of "so what" if someone makes a crappy movie. Yeah, I am not being forced to watch it, but too much crap is too successful, and people are really getting used to it. That is the problem with movies, a lot of people are perfectly fine with crap, even knowing it is crap while they are paying for it. I think that is what some our movie directors are thinking now - yeah, it is crap, but it will sell tickets, so "who cares". I think it would be just great if directors stop making crap movies, if it means there are hundreds less movies a year that is perfectly fine. Michael Mann might be an auteur or whatever, but him making crappy Blackhat serves no purpose. Well see, part of the problem is that you are defining the movie(s) in question as crap. That opinion, not fact. The only fact we can hang on these movies is that some liked them, some hated them and some felt "meh" about them. I totally agree with you that directors, no matter who they are, should be doing better. For what it's worth, I'd bet that you and I would mostly agree on which movies are crap and which movies aren't. If I seem to be giving the Spy Kids movies a free pass it's because, as goofy as they were, they had a good message to them: family. And I think that's worthwhile and should not be disregarded. That being said, I believe in Karma. If he messes up Jonny Quest, then sure as shite someone in about 50 years is going to come along and remake Spy Kids and they will be even worse LOL!

The problem with this is we are just accepting the lowest common denominator. I'm sure there's a fan for everything, but there's certainly no question some stuff is garbage even if you feed it to the kids and they eat it up. Case in point, in one of the Spy Kids movies the kids are tossing vomit bags as a defensive weapons. What's next their shit and piss? This is substandard primeval gutter trash and should be called out on it regardless if some kids think it's funny. Hollywood tends to think if it's gross kids will love it. Well I never thought that way. I don't hold JQ to some incredibly high standard, but it was decent for it's time with some misgivings. But with some talent, some sense of good taste from someone whom respects kids something good can come of it.

Ado, it's not that the audiences are perfectly fine with crap, but that the economic elites who finance the production of mass media are perfectly fine with it. Robert Rodriguez is where he is because he's an ADHD guy who like to do juvenile, borderline Sid-and-Marty-Krofft stuff who can also do a little regurgitated Sergio Leone with a Latin American twist (That Latin American movie market is a big one). He's what passes for solid technique and construction, nowadays. Like lots of our jointly endured political outcomes these days, the greater proportion of sub-literate citizens have by-and-large voted for these dumb pastiches with their wallets. Me, I'm just grateful Game of Thrones exists to keep me from forswearing Hollywood content forever. Eventually the worm will turn, after burrowing out of Robert Rodriguez's skull.

There is something to what you are saying Born. And a nice piece of writing as well. Yes, he does seem like a ADHD guy who recycles left overs from other, better artists, and sub genre pulp nostaligia, sequels and plying on nostalgia which would have been left on it's own. And, yes, I do think that there is this sort of racial endorsement of him, because is a "latino film maker' whatever the heck that is supposed to mean. So while it is great that he casts class talents like Ricardo Montalbahn once upon a time, the problem is that the instrument that he casts them in, and lots of other somewhat good actors, is a horky piece of crap.

You know this just came to mind while reading these posts. I have nothing against trashy cinema as its own little niche in the market place. I have my own guilty pleasures. But trashy work should stay in it's own place. I don't like the fact that the "B" movie studios and their creative people are crossing the bridge into mainstream high budget films where I expect a little more quality and sophistication. Sure Ron Howard and James Cameron came from that background but they grew as filmmakers and so did their films in excellent. Someone like RR just dose the same garbage regardless of the budget or property given to him.
