Hi, could anyone tell me what scenes in Alien are tracked with Goldsmith's score for Freud? I am especially curious about the opening scene where the Nostromo passes over camera. Was that written for Freud? I've tried listening to the isolated tracks on the DVD but I just find them confusing. Thanks!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the FREUD music appears in the acid-through-floor sequence as well as when Dallas rummages through the air shaft.
The opening is from Goldsmith's original score, but not what he had written for THAT sequence, if memory serves. I can't remember what other sequence the opening music was originally written for, though.
I'm one of the few people who prefer Scott's version over Goldsmith's original version in the opening, and -- in fact -- most of Scott's changes otherwise as well. But we've discussed this a million times on the board.
The opening music is all original music written by Goldsmith for Alien; the Freud music scenes are: the scene of the face hugger acid blood dripping down through the Nostromo decks; the preparation for Dallas' search of the air shafts and his search up to when he's nabbed by the alien; Ripley searching for the cat on the Nostromo bridge just before Parker and Lambert are killed.
Though I don't like the use of the Freud music in Alien (it does feel out of place), it is worth repeating how great that score is and I'm surprised to this day it's still available. As a matter of fact Varese has it on sale right now, I recommend anyone to check it out.
I was asking about the opening scene in particular because I saw an interview with Goldsmith in which he said that they altered the "waking up" scene by temping in a lullaby he had written for FREUD. This didn't sound right to me. I thought maybe he was thinking of the opening Nostromo scene, because they clearly did replace the warm, romantic music he originally wrote for that sequence.
the main title in the film is a reworked version of 'the passage' which later covers the astronauts' entry into the alien craft.
and the liner notes for 'hyper sleep' confirm that it was originally temped with the freud track "thirsty girl", which goldsmith thought was all wrong. in the end he was asked to redo the track he'd written, leaving out a trumpet solo which recalled his original main theme.
Thanks Nyborg! That answers a lot of questions I had. Now that I think about it, Jerry did say something in the interview about re-doing a track they had temped.
The story behind the Alien score could fill a book by itself....there's lots of info out there (the Intrada CD Booklet filled in some nice blanks, as well as a few new tidbits).
Wonderful, wonderful score. In any of the forms it has taken.
