Interesting review of Spectre. I`ve yet to see the movie. However I`ve read a lot of reviews, both internationally and nationally (here in Sweden). Sometimes when a movie gets great reviews then when I see it, it never live up to the expectations (Mad Max 4 for instance) but when a movie gets bad reviews I am still interested to see it for myself and sometimes I just disagree with the reviewers. So when it comes to Spectre I`ve seen everything from 5 out of 5 in reviews to as low as 2 out of 5. So in this case it will be interesting to see it when I do see the movie (probably this upcoming weekend).

Hate to be nitpicky but the new transfer of My Fair Lady, unlike the previous Blu-ray, is not in 2.35, which is not its intended ratio - it's 2.20 as it should be.

Goldfinger had nothing to do with SPECTRE (the organisation, that is). I rate this review: * out of *****

(*Unless Sam Mendes wants to somehow retrofit that into the next film, of course.)

Also interesting about My Fair Lady - in the doc about the restoration of the film, Bob Harris mentions that the fou channel and six channel masters for the sound were lost and that he wa using a printmaster. this master along with reverb added on all of the songs (hated that), has been used for years. but over at home theater forum, Harris mentions they are using the actual six track master. I would love to know when and where this was found.
Also, as before, we have Audreys own vocals for Wouldn't it be Loverly and Show Me.
Collectors also have Audreys original vocals put back in for Just You Wait, Without You, and I Could Have Danced All Night.

Goldfinger had nothing to do with SPECTRE (the organisation, that is).

In Thunderball, Blofeld distinctly names Auric Goldfinger as a SPECTRE agent.

EDIT: Wait...I thought Goldfinger was mentioned in Thunderball...

In the novel, Goldfinger was tied to SMERSH, so maybe that is what AD was recalling; however, that's not mentioned in the movie, either. Goldfinger was just an evil businessman.

I disagree with Andy more often than agree and this is just another case. Spectre tedious? Dreary tone? Craig walking through his role? It seems we saw a different film. This is clearly the best Bond film since Casino Royale, and I was surprised it was so much better than Skyfall, considering I didn't much care for Mendes' previous film at all with it's (genuinely) dreary tone and Home Alone type climax that just brought the whole film down to kids level. Spectre felt like a James Bond film again, with some of the best action sequences the series has ever produced, the first continuous Touch of Evil extended shot (likely made even longer with VFX), being a standout and culminating in a terrific helicopter fight. Craig fits the role very well, and if this is indeed his last Bond film, he went out on a high note. Everything is superior to the previous two Bonds, and particularly Newman's score, which lights fire under the action in a way the previous Bond score didn't do. I still prefer Casino Royale as s film, but I think most Bond enthusiasts will very much enjoy Spectre.

I was shocked by how disappointed I was with Skyfall. Talk about tedious. But I loved Spectre. It balanced all the classic Bond elements nicely, and I especially liked the contribution of Q to the story. Didn't like the theme song at first, but it's grown on me. It makes for a pleasant earworm. Thomas Newman has a great instrumental version on the soundtrack, but the rest of the score is about as forgettable as they come. Probably a good bet that Newman's Oscar nom this year will be for Bridge of Spies. But, yes....the movie could've and should've been about 20 minutes shorter.
