I don't own any Star Wars scores. I saw the release of this collection on Amazon due for a 1/8/16 release. Is this a worthwhile purchase for someone new to Star Wars scores? Not naive here and true Williams fan but I just would like some feedback. Thanks as always. : )

If you had to pin it down to one title I'd say Star Wars (Hint: that would be IV of VI.)

Not a dude and I doubt it. Thanks for the advice on the collection.

I like the new set's use of the word ULTIMATE. It brings a warm smile of nostalgia to my face.

For the original trilogy scores (IV, V and VI) , I think you should seek out the 1993 Arista box set and for the prequel scores, I think the best presentation to date remains their OST CDs. We're all still hoping for an Arista-box-style treatment of Episodes I, II, and III. (Did I get that right, assembled experts?)

It's a good deal. You're getting all the scores in one place for a decent price. But, I'm partial to the original trilogy and not the prequel scores as much. This is a fantastic set:

http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Trilogy-Soundtrack-Anthology/dp/B000002VI7/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1450414536&sr=8-1&keywords=star+wars+soundtrack+anthology

I really recommend this one, as Williams' album presentations are top notch. And if you like them, pick up the expanded editions cheap. I think you'd enjoy the original trilogy music more than the latter prequels.

I happen to prefer these (almost) complete versions of the original trilogy that come with this new set (especially "A New Hope"). Many here however, prefer the old Out-of-Print Arista Anthology box set, which is not without its charms (including the lack of combined tracks into long "suites" and the inclusion of the original "Ewok Celebration" and the source cue "Lapti Nek").

However there's so much extra material on these Sony 2-disc versions, that to me, they're worth getting if you like 'Star Wars' music.

And for $59 for 10 discs at Amazon, it's a steal.

For the record, the sound quality on the Arista box set is much superior on Empire and especially Jedi than on the RCA/Sony 2 CD sets. While the latter are more comprehensive in terms of content, they often come across as muddy and indistinct as compared to the earlier releases, the LPs and the Musical Journey DVD.

I don't get it. Are you sure about both of these statements?

Not starting to troll or anything. I truly don't get it. It's like saying 'I love Rembrandt but I've never seen The Nightwatch'.

On topic: The Empire strikes back is the best score ever written. IV an VI a more than fine companions and excellent scores on their own. And as a bonus: IV was a game changer in film music (and film). It reintroduced romantic and symphonic scoring into cinema.

So by the damn thing already smile

I too held off a long time (well over a decade) before finally getting the Star Wars scores by Williams. I wouldn't call myself a true Williams fan but have heard his scores plenty be it through the movies, concerts, ... . When I finally did get the Star Wars original trilogy expansions it felt like I knew these scores plenty from having watched the movies (and even played some of the games). The same with the Indiana Jones movies though there I did get the scores early on and listen to them more than any of the Star Wars scores.

I will say in terms of content that the ultimate soundtrack collection looks appealing. If I didn't already get the trilogy set, I'd definitely pick this up.

Edwina, given that Amazon has this new collection for $59 on preorder, I would say it's a great way to pick up all the soundtracks in their current release form. Then you can decide for yourself which of the six scores you enjoy most at 10 bucks per movie.

I too love the Arista trilogy box, but for someone who is picking up the scores for the first time, this new set seems like an ideal choice.

I think you can be a Williams fan (through whatever music), and then one day you notice the STAR WARS scores, but hey, it's six movies, many different albums, and instead of just buying anything, you focus on other things first. It's not as if they go out of print any time soon.

I'd say the current Ultimate Edition with the scores for all six movies is a top notch deal if you want to dive into the STAR WARS musical universe. Also, you get them in a nice looking boxed-set.
Personally, I think the prequel scores are just as good as the original trilogy scores or at least certainly more than worthwhile. The Arista set is also excellent, keeping some (though not all) of the earlier album edits. The Arista set contains only the original trilogy, you'd have to purchase the prequel scores separately then. Personally, I'd go for the Ultimate Edition if I had to buy just one set these days. But I don't have to chose and keep my Arista set as well. ;-)

Something similar happened with me as well. I had loads of Williams scores, but the only STAR WARS music I had for years was that Skywalker Symphony compilation CD, until I bought the original trilogy boxset (Sony) in 2004. I've since bought the releases of the prequel scores, and today I bought the new one. I can still say I'm more familiar with a lot of Williams' other work than STAR WARS.

The really pathetic and disappointing aspect of the Sony reissues is that once again they did not make them truly different and upgraded sonically by releasing then now on SACD or Blu-ray audio.

Depends if you want the highlights, OST suites or expanded versions which have a lot of worthy material not on the OST's.

Can't go wrong with the OST's of Star Wars and Empire. I think Jedi OST is rather weak and improves greatly with the 2 disc set. Not a huge fan of the prequels. I have the OST's and combined the best of Attack Of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith into one awesome playlist.

But it's Star Wars music, and like potato chips you can't have just one!

The Force Awakens should justify spending even more money to refurbish catalogue elements on these movies.

Am I right, Actual Album Producers who participate in this board?

So, the 4th disc is a sort-of greatest hits?
That seems redundant and pointless.

The 4th disc is a DVD, with edited film clips that accompany the music. It's a reissue of the DVD that came with Revenge of the Sith back in 2005. (Basically a DVD version of the "Star Wars In Concert" live performances, but with the OST versions rather than concert arrangements of the music.)
