I like the new set's use of the word ULTIMATE. It brings a warm smile of nostalgia to my face. For the original trilogy scores (IV, V and VI) , I think you should seek out the 1993 Arista box set and for the prequel scores, I think the best presentation to date remains their OST CDs. We're all still hoping for an Arista-box-style treatment of Episodes I, II, and III. (Did I get that right, assembled experts?)

For the record, the sound quality on the Arista box set is much superior on Empire and especially Jedi than on the RCA/Sony 2 CD sets. While the latter are more comprehensive in terms of content, they often come across as muddy and indistinct as compared to the earlier releases, the LPs and the Musical Journey DVD.

Edwina, given that Amazon has this new collection for $59 on preorder, I would say it's a great way to pick up all the soundtracks in their current release form. Then you can decide for yourself which of the six scores you enjoy most at 10 bucks per movie. I too love the Arista trilogy box, but for someone who is picking up the scores for the first time, this new set seems like an ideal choice.

I don't own any Star Wars scores.... [snip] .... and true Williams fan... I don't get it. Are you sure about both of these statements? Not starting to troll or anything. I truly don't get it. It's like saying 'I love Rembrandt but I've never seen The Nightwatch'. I think you can be a Williams fan (through whatever music), and then one day you notice the STAR WARS scores, but hey, it's six movies, many different albums, and instead of just buying anything, you focus on other things first. It's not as if they go out of print any time soon. I'd say the current Ultimate Edition with the scores for all six movies is a top notch deal if you want to dive into the STAR WARS musical universe. Also, you get them in a nice looking boxed-set. Personally, I think the prequel scores are just as good as the original trilogy scores or at least certainly more than worthwhile. The Arista set is also excellent, keeping some (though not all) of the earlier album edits. The Arista set contains only the original trilogy, you'd have to purchase the prequel scores separately then. Personally, I'd go for the Ultimate Edition if I had to buy just one set these days. But I don't have to chose and keep my Arista set as well. ;-)

The really pathetic and disappointing aspect of the Sony reissues is that once again they did not make them truly different and upgraded sonically by releasing then now on SACD or Blu-ray audio. The Force Awakens should justify spending even more money to refurbish catalogue elements on these movies. Am I right, Actual Album Producers who participate in this board?
