Not intentionally, of course. Whenever I tote discs places, either to listen to them elsewhere or to read through the notes, I often forget them & they're left at some bygone place.

At hotel rooms, taxis, offices, I'm always extra careful to retrieve everything I've brought with me now.

How does everyone avoid situations like this?

I never ever take original CD's out of the house. I make copies for the car and at work.

This. But I don't bother making copies either, I just travel with MP3s.

I put my CDs onto my ipod. And then leave that behind.

Every single CD place that I've been in, I've left. It doesn't matter to me: Amoeba Records, the old Tower Records on Sunset, HMVs, Best Buys, the Virgin Megastore... I've exited them all! And then I've either gotten into my car and driven away, or taken some other kind of public transportation to get home.

Since my score music is one of my treasured entertainments, I am extra, extra careful when taking them out of the apartment.

But that doesn't stop me from losing them inside the apartment.

The CDs were all over the place.

I didn't treat them with the respect that I afford LPs, because LPs have inherent value to me, while CDs are nothing but zeros and ones. I never could develop an emotional attachment to them.

All of the CDs are backed up. The physical objects represented a convenient way to lug them around from place to place at one time.

I recommend keeping only digital files and unloading the physical object, and then this will no longer be an issue.

The only time my CDs come out of the tower is if I need to re-rip them to the hard drive. Any new CD I get, gets instantly ripped to my hard drive then put away unless it's absolutely necessary to dig them out again (like hard drive crash). I've got an iPod Touch (3rd Gen) and an iPhone with my most listened to scores on both and take those with me so my CDs can be safe here at home.

If I did have a vehicle I'd burn CD-R versions of my scores and have those in the car. No way I'd leave actual CDs in the car with what people will steal these days.

I wished I had taken care of my CDs when I was younger and ones I did have got destroyed, sadly enough. These days I do take care of my CDs since they can be a bit pricey for some.

I've never lost a CD or left one behind anywhere and I don't make backups on CD-R or on any other device. I'm pretty anal about our CD collection, even going so far as to keep them in resealable plastic sleeves to protect the cases from getting mucked and scratched up, but I never hesitate to take the originals in the car and to work and wherever else.

From my entire collection, Ive lost about 2 cds so far. One disc missing only from its case (ALIENS) while my BTTF III which was my first cd purchase was recently misplaced while bringing it to and fro from the car. ..(Maybe its my wife..)

All my cds are carefully shelved in my 2 wooden cabinet with glass doors and it even has a locking key. Also I try to retain the plastic wraps from which they were issued and slide them back after use. Such that they retain their freshness and and even the new smell of the printed booklets. Kinda neat.

We've moved three times (no.4 is next week) in twelve years and so far I haven't lost any cd's whilst moving.

When we move, I pack them, I carry them and I unpack them at the other end and put them carefully back on their shelves, I know it's daft but I've collected these things since 1984 and they are (after the wife) my most treasured possessions.

The only time my cd's come out of their storage shelves is when we move or when I play them, I don't take them to anyone else's house, and I make cdr's of them to play in the car, nobody borrows them, ever.

The truth is, to try borrowing one of my cd's would be so futile that only a complete fool would attempt it.

I give OCD a bad name.
