R.I.P. Victoria, yet another British celebrity (comedian) taken by cancer this year, far too young at 62. I had a bit of on-off with her comedy brand, one moment laughing out loud, the next bemused and not getting the joke, only to have the next joke splitting my sides.

Yes, it was disappointing to hear about this while driving home from work today. A bit of a shock; she seemed like a real nice lady.

Know what? Never really liked her. I remember her on something like Braden's Week, and didn't like her then. That's Life followed and she still annoyed the hell out of me. It's just her brand of humour just escapes me somehow. Julie Walters got to me better.

And a bit-part actor friend of mine said she was a total 'superior queen' on a job she and he did.

That job was the Morecambe and Wise biopic she took part in. And funnily enough, it's the only thing I've really enjoyed her in.

But I do realise her talent. My taste is unimportant here, because she was, if nothing else, at the forefront of all the women that followed.

Ah, this is a shame. Bit of a shocker. I remember watching her show as a kid and still remember a couple of the sketches.

Being totally honest, like Paul I recognise her talent but I personally never found her in the slightest bit amusing.

But as I say, I appreciate she had a lot of comedic talent even if it wasn't to my taste. And 62 is no age to die.

RIP

I was sorry to hear this. I never went out of my way to watch her, but when I did I always thought of her as an original and very clever and skilled comedienne. Some of her sketches and songs were classic.

I've never heard of her. Did she do anything we might have seen here in the States?

Kind of sad when people feel they have to go on to Victoria Wood's RIP thread and comment how they never really liked her or didn't find her amusing. frown

Hugely talented and gave a lot of people a lot pleasure over the decades. She'll be missed.

May she Rest In Peace.

I just watched some of her on You Tube. Her facial expressions kind of remind me of Dame Edna.

Her comedy was an acquired taste for me. She talked very fast, often too fast, which was detremental to her presentation.
I had a few episodes of her short stories on video however and rewatched four of them from time to time so she did win me over. Great ones about her backpacking, one about her visiting a health farm, one about dating and one about going on holiday. Oh and there is one about a daytime TV show with a soap set in a shopping mall......... so that's five episodes.
I'd say if you haven't seen those, give them a try as you still might like those even if you didn't care for all the other things.

D.S.

I don't believe she did much work outside of the United Kingdom (but I stand to be corrected), so I doubt many from the rest of the world would know of her. Also, her style was very much in the British eccentric area and her subjects often covering North/South divides in the U.K., so might not be understood outside of this country.

In Australia we had 'Victoria Wood As Seen On TV' and 'DinnerLadies' and some of her other shows. They were screened on our ABCTV network, which is our version of the BBC. Very sad to hear of her passing.

Yes,it's always intresting what travels and won't doesn't (as beloved as Carol Burnett (for instance)is in the US she caught on internationally).

Bless her. I love her style of comedy and I am grateful that I saw her perform live in Auckland in 1997.

There is a forum thread about her rather unusual and unexpected brief connection to our hobby with this 1985 "inspired by" release:
