R.I.P. Victoria, yet another British celebrity (comedian) taken by cancer this year, far too young at 62. I had a bit of on-off with her comedy brand, one moment laughing out loud, the next bemused and not getting the joke, only to have the next joke splitting my sides.
Know what? Never really liked her. I remember her on something like Braden's Week, and didn't like her then. That's Life followed and she still annoyed the hell out of me. It's just her brand of humour just escapes me somehow. Julie Walters got to me better.
And a bit-part actor friend of mine said she was a total 'superior queen' on a job she and he did.
That job was the Morecambe and Wise biopic she took part in. And funnily enough, it's the only thing I've really enjoyed her in.
But I do realise her talent. My taste is unimportant here, because she was, if nothing else, at the forefront of all the women that followed.
I was sorry to hear this. I never went out of my way to watch her, but when I did I always thought of her as an original and very clever and skilled comedienne. Some of her sketches and songs were classic.
Her comedy was an acquired taste for me. She talked very fast, often too fast, which was detremental to her presentation. I had a few episodes of her short stories on video however and rewatched four of them from time to time so she did win me over. Great ones about her backpacking, one about her visiting a health farm, one about dating and one about going on holiday. Oh and there is one about a daytime TV show with a soap set in a shopping mall......... so that's five episodes. I'd say if you haven't seen those, give them a try as you still might like those even if you didn't care for all the other things.
I don't believe she did much work outside of the United Kingdom (but I stand to be corrected), so I doubt many from the rest of the world would know of her. Also, her style was very much in the British eccentric area and her subjects often covering North/South divides in the U.K., so might not be understood outside of this country.

In Australia we had 'Victoria Wood As Seen On TV' and 'DinnerLadies' and some of her other shows. They were screened on our ABCTV network, which is our version of the BBC. Very sad to hear of her passing.
