The legendary director Guy Hamilton has passed away at 93. I had the good fortune of interviewing Hamilton at his home in Mallorca last summer. He talked about his carreer and we discussed his relationship with John Barry and Ron Goodwin. He directed the Bond films Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, Live And Let Die and The Man with the Golden Gun. He pointed out how efficient John Barry was and how talented to go in at a moments notice and change music cues. Hamilton also recalled being present at Shirley Basseys recording of Goldfinger and how he pitched the idea for the song to Barry. Hamilton was a jazz fanatic and ha an old recording of Lotte Lenya (Rosa Klebb in From Russia With Love) singing Mack the Knife. A song about a villain. He suggested Barry use the same idea. He also mentioned working with Barry on the little seen The Party`s Over.
Going on to discuss the epic film Battle of Britain he recalled having to replace William Waltons score. Hamilton preffered Waltons score, but "the studio wanted typical Hollywood-music", so it was changed to Ron Goodwins score, which he did not like. I think he felt Waltons score had more gravitas and elegance. So the old styr about Waltons score being too short seems to be studio propaganda.
Hamilton must have liked Ron Goodwin though, as they collaborated on the rather good (film and score) Force 10 from Navarone, with Harrison Ford. Hamilton recalled Ford being the least charming person in Hollywood and that everyone on that film, except Edward Fox was "a pain in the ass".
Hamilton was assistant director to Carol Reed for The Third Man and remember recording the score by Anton Karas in Reeds Vienna hotell room, though later rerecorded in London.
Hamilton directed some great films and he was truly a funny and very charming man.
