Brian is set to return as the composer for the upcoming action sequel "Fast 8". The film is directed by F. Gary Gray ("Straight Outta Compton", "The Italian Job") and will be released on April 14, 2017 by Universal Pictures.
I remember when trilogies were special (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Godfather). Now we're at #8 for a lowest-common-denominator series about cars.
Number 8 is apparently the first in a trilogy.
Yeah,
#1 and #2 were independent films in the series with little to do with each other. #4-6 were a trilogy (with #3 as the coda!). The series is going into #8 but it's slightly more ambitious than "a lowest-common-denominator series about cars".
"There's no question the havoc and villainy she brings but you're attracted to it" - composer Brian Tyler says about Charlize Theron's character ("Entertainment Weekly" magazine) :
I quite like the Fast And The Furious series. The 7th one was a blast! More to them than just fast cars. Some real good characters / humour / story. I just wish the titles were a little easier to keep track of. How many combinations of "Fast" and "Furious" can there be...? lol
Pretty sure the art of the trilogy lost its luster when we ended up with three GD HANGOVER movies.
Besides, society has survived 10 Friday the 13th movies and 7 Police Academy movies. This is nothing.
What irks me is the nomenclature of the series. There's no Fast 7 or Fast 3, but there is a First Blood Part II: Rambo and a Rambo III and a Rambo. I need a numeric system to help me ignore these movies in sequential order.
The movies, eh, I can take or leave these. We've watched more than half of them, and they've gotten more ambitious and polished, but they are kinda goofball entertainment. The last film had amazing action that was just ridiculous, at times the storyline was just stupid but they're good popcorn fun.
But I do love Tyler's scores for these. The movie didn't give him the chance to do his big 8 minute cue the rest of his F&F scores had, hopefully the new one will feature an "epic" action cue.
I found Justin Lin's trilogy interesting: it was fun to see him grow from a small-potatoes director to a spectacular goofy heist choreographer by Fast 5 and Furious 6. I didn't care for James Wan's entry: he has a good eye but I've found that as his budgets have increased he loses command of plot and character in favor of visuals. I'm actually rather looking forward to 8: I'm hoping that F. Gary Gray can bring the promised speed and fury back to this bloated series, and after Straight Outta Compton I kinda believe that he can pull it off. Fingers crossed.
I also hope that this entry finally inspires Tyler to bring something as fun as Togue to the series again. Seriously, he's never again reached the heights of his very first track for the series, and I hope he can finally match or surpass that.
I don't need to ever watch these films, they do nothing for me its a Mookie franchise, I do remember Vin Diesel in the ITV series Gladiators, done well for his self since then. Composer is good though.
Ahead of the official trailer's debut on Sunday, December 11, Universal has shared a 15-second sneak peek, as well as revealed that the eighth movie will be titled "THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS".
