We're visiting this beautiful city shortly to mark our 25th wedding anniversary. Mrs TG is getting tickets pre-booked for the Uffizi, as well as for whichever gallery is home to the (alleged) original David, and some tower near Pisa airport that, due to dodgy builders hundreds of years before Sergio Leone gave credibility to Italian cowboys, is said to lean over at an angle. Sounds a bit far-fetched to me.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone who knows the place was aware of any shops selling soundtracks that I could "accidentally" walk us past while we're in town. All suggestions appreciated.

I didn't come across anything in Florence, but some of the sites there will be featured in the upcoming Tom Hanks flick, Inferno.

Not too far from Ufizzi is an incredible gelato shop called Gelateria dei Neri. Neri also has a small dessert shop across the small bridge with some epic Tiramisu.

Actually! I just remembered close to this Gelato shop there was a second hand record/CD shop - but there was only one soundtrack in the place. That area is pretty cool at night, a lot of small local businesses and lots of people hanging out in the streets.

The place is called Data Records 93 - it's literally right next to the Gelato shop. From google street view looks like mostly vinyl.

Thanks, Ryan - I expect it'll be pretty warm in Florence in mid-July, so a Gelateria should be just the ticket. And if we find the secondhand shop nearby that'll be a bonus, even with a dearth of scores - my tastes run beyond the genre, as regular readers may know!

Obrigado!

No problem. Pre-trip record store research is always a must.

Been doing it since 1995 using Yellow Pages in libraries - now it's MUCH easier.

I was in Florence in April this year. I did not find anywhere but that does not mean there ain't any.
We only visited the old city. Our tour guide did not know of any shops....I hope you find somewhere.

Google produced these, although they tend to be vinyl-centric and no indication of soundtrack selection.... the previously mentioned Data records gets a shout-out though.

Why would you visit soundtrack shops when you're in friggin' Firenze, TG? Take in the sights, man, and have a coffee or beer or wine at a roadside café! smile

There are sights? Why was i not informed?

But really, Thor, if I'd spent four days there and later found out that Florence was home to, say, Europe's biggest music shop with an endless supply of modestly-priced Morricone CDs, wouldn't I have felt a fool? smile

True. The Italian Morricone Connection is worth exploring when one is such a big fan as you.

Whenever we go on holiday (and we go away...A LOT!!), my missus is always amazed at my dedication and determination, when out and about, looking for ANY kind of record or CD shop.
It probably stems from years ago, when they were plentiful and offered some amazing finds, but now it's like hunting for a needle in a haystack.
Even when I do find the occasional one now, she always offers the mocking '30 minutes...and you never bought anything!!' upon my return, empty handed (she's usually sunning herself on some bench or beach nearby).
Good luck in your ventures TG..and enjoy your jolly.

don't hold your breath..just like other countries, there's hardly any record stores left at all in this country, much less specialized ones.
There's the Feltrinelli chain (sort of an Italian Barnes&Noble) but the CD selection in any field outside pop music has been in steady decline for years.
The French store FNAC was the last one to have a good selection, but they closed all the Italian stores a few years ago (the Milan branch at least was great, it's sorely missed)
If you're looking for Morricones (hard to find in US and/or modestly priced) by far your best bet is to order from Intermezzo Media or from Amazon.it and have the stuff delivered to your hotel in Florence.

Heh - that used to be us before we lived near Leeds but would call into Movie Boulevard en route between London and Newcastle!

And it's my ambition to go on as many holidays as you, Kev.

Thanks, hyperdanny. Not quite the same as excavating in dusty old CD racks but I appreciate the thought.

Speaking of the hotel, it delights me that we're staying in the Machiavelli Palace! How utterly apt, some might say.

Hey Tg - why didnt you say??!!

There is a great Cd and dvd shop in the galleria not minutes (literally along the pavement and up steps) from firenze station.
Bought a wonderful GBU cartoon poster from there plus loads of spag western dvds - including Tepepa which id not seen before.

Plus places to eat - 5 mins walk from galleria there is a fabulous ridiculously cheap self serve restaurant above a shop which working italians use for lunch - their pasta ragu and red table by jug wine is just deliche and glugable!! Also you look down on a junction crossroads and the totty is unbelievable! Walk in - spend a few hours looking over you dvds, cds and Ennio books in italian you also bought from the bookshop and stagger out after 3 carafes of the red!

Names to follow when ive researched.

Alberti Nuova is the name of the dvd cd store in the galleria within firenze station.

The self serve is a secret. Dont want TG breaking the chair on my favourite table. wink

Interesting reading. I go back and forth to Florence a lot.
Warning for visitors - when you have your first taste of Florentine food, you will spend the rest of your time, plotting and scheming, on how to spend the rest of your life doing nothing, but eating food in Florence. It is that amazing, wherever you go.
