Probably heading to DC at some point this year. Just wanted to know if anyone on the board knew of any decent shops to check out for Used Cds.

Thanks in advance!

I've been to used CD stores all over this town and the best soundtrack selection I've found so far is at CDepot in College Park, MD. It's the most like the old stores I used to frequent in college. The tricky part is getting there if you don't have use of a car. The nearest metro stop is south of U of Maryland campus and the store is north. I'm sure you could make your way by bus. If you let me know your schedule I might be able to give you a lift. I'm always happy to have an excuse to make a run up there.

Wow thanks for the tip and ride offer Mike, very kind! It looks like about an hour via transit. Most likely the plan is to visit sometime in the mid to late Fall. If you have any other spots worth checking out please let me know. Our friends rent a place near the Eastern Market Station.

I'm convinced at this point that CDpot is a drug front that happens to benefit people who still buy music. The store is like a warehouse that's constantly filled with CDs and records overflowing out of their bins (when they aren't piled up in boxes blocking the aisles). I usually shop for records at this point, but the prices on that front are always well below what they tend to be in the rest of the DC metro area, and the selection is uniformly great. So they clearly buy way more then they're selling, and what they do sell, they sell for far less than its market price - yet they've somehow they've stayed afloat for decades. So yeah, if you can get there, well worth the trek.

In DC proper, the only record store I know of that still sells CDs (and not exclusively records) is Smash Records in Adams Morgan. I don't know how much they bother with film music CDs (CDpot is a rare record store that actually features an extensive soundtrack collection), but Adams Morgan is worth the visit if you're from out of town anyway (if you're looking for a good coffee shop while you're there, I recommend Tryst). Second Story Books in Dupont Circle also tends to sell used CDs, and if you're lucky enough to find anything there you can probably get it for a buck or two. Both Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan are fairly close to each other, so you could easily hit both in the same afternoon.

I've had luck in the past with CD Cellar, which combined two locations into one back in January this year. The single location is now in Falls Church, Virginia (west of DC proper): http://www.cdcellarva.com/falls-church

Record and Tape Exchange in Fairfax, Virginia, also: http://www.rtxrecords.com/

And if you do find yourself with a rental car and are up for a day trip, Screen Archives is in Linden, Virginia, about 65 miles west of DC, right off of I-66. They don't have a storefront but usually allow visitors if given advance notice.

For what it's worth I can tell you that the Smash Records soundtrack selection is virtually non-existent. But as PW said it's worth a trip to hang out in Adams Morgan. There are a ton of restaurants, bars and other nooks in that area.

CDepot is my favorite but I go to CD Cellar the most because it's so close to where I am. Their soundtrack selection is relatively small but it's well curated. I found a copy of the Best of Popul Vuh (from the Herzog films) there recently.

One other recommendation, though it's off the beaten path. If you end up taking a day trip to the Baltimore inner harbor while you're here, there's a huge store in Fell's Point called The Sound Garden. Definitely worth checking out.

There used to be a LOT of TERRIFIC CD and USED CD stores down in Dupont Circle. One that I remember was Graffiti Records, which is where I bought my Oscar promo of Young's score for The Shipping News. Out in Alexandria on King Street, near the very end of the street was a used record and CD store.... but even if it isn't still in existence, it's a very nice walk down to it from the Metro.
I also remember that I bought my promo copy of A.I. at Kemp Mill Records down in Dupont Circle.
Ahhhh... such wonderful memories.....

Sound Garden is fantastic - one of my favorite record stores in the country. Like I said before, I go to places like that mainly for vinyl now, but it's the sort of store where, at least as of a few years ago, they still had used CD copies of things like Man with the Golden Arm and those CAM Morricone albums. They also have a substantial and very well-curated selection of used DVD and Bluray.

Holy crap. What a find, particularly in a market like DC.

Have you been here before? It isn't too far from me and I'm curious if it's worth the trip.

No,no,no..... you misunderstood.... I meant it was one of those "for promotional use only" CDs... like when LPs had the holes punched in them.... it was not the Oscar promo.... sorry for the misunderstanding!

I've been there quite a few times, when I was working in Fairfax County, but it's been a few years now since my last trip. I do recall that there were fewer used CDs than I remembered seeing during my previous trips, especially soundtrack/score and classical music. It seemed the vinyl selection had grown, though.

A bit of warning if you do go there, the parking is ATROCIOUS!!! There's a Trader Joe's in the same plaza that draws quite a crowd, and it's a royal pain the a$$. This couldn't be more appropriate:

All of these were my haunts, too, when I first moved to the area in the mid-90s. I think Kemp Mill closed down not long after I arrived, so I may have gotten in only one visit, but I do recall snagging Holdridge's EL PUEBLO DEL SOL and a few of the Bernstein Mainstream CDs at a few of the Dupont Circle shops.

I miss all of the Tower Records stores, too, especially the one in DC off of Pennsylvania Avenue, as I recall, not too far from GW. Loved the separate classical room! Also the one near Fair Oaks Mall, in Fairfax. frown

The store on King Street in Alexandria was The Record Mart. Unfortunately it closed a while ago, but it was a fantastic store. I spent a lot of money there! And I miss the creaky wood floor!

A short distance away on Union Street was Olsson's Books & Records. Like The Record Mart, it's also long gone. I used to walk down on my lunch hour and browse.

Haha! I'd forgotten about that creaky floor.

That's right! I think there was an Olsson's near Dupont Circle as well.

There's also McKay Used Books in Manassas, VA, a few miles off of I-66: http://mckayusedbooks.com/. There used to be two locations, but several years ago, they merged into a single, larger location.

Forgot about "2nd & Charles" in Woodbridge, Virginia - http://2ndandcharles.com/locations/woodbridge-va/

About 25 miles south of DC off of I-95. I "scored" the Alan Silvestri Themes 2-CD promo there a few years back.

There's also a location in Hagerstown, Maryland, but it's over 70 miles away from DC - http://2ndandcharles.com/locations/hagerstown-md

Damn, I thought I'd been to all the good places within shouting distance but clearly I need to expand my range. Definitely going to check out McKay's and 2nd & Charles.

Ha, I've learned of a few places myself, thanks to this thread!
