The score is excellent, and I own a few recordings of it (the Varese rerecording, the Nonesuch recording, the OST)... I am not all that likely to buy a new version of the OST, not because I am not interested in the music, but because I fear the OST sound would not be up to par.

I would buy this immediately, but chances for a release are pretty slim. Our only chance that something of this exists is if Alex North has kept copies of the scoring masters in his private collection. All the Warner masters from this period seem to be gone. Next, you would have to find a label that's doing (Golden Age) releases with Warner's - complicated these days. And if that wasn't enough, UMG has to agree because of the Capitol album. We know how long it took to release a complete "Giant". I'm afraid this isn't going to happen

In addition to having no knowledge whatsoever of what the state of the tapes and rights are, I've been busy all weekend building cages with tile floors — I have grout coming out of places on my body I didn't know existed — and dealing with cats coughing up hairballs the shape and size of a Soviet Typhoon Class nuclear submarine (don't ask), so I haven't had a chance to sign onto the boards until just now. However, this is a cornerstone score of Alex North's career, and a searing accompaniment for a classic film. It's also damn good music. I would love a restoration of the complete original soundtrack, and would definitely pick one up were it to become available. For right now, I do enjoy the Jerry Goldsmith recording.

I'm rather surprised that NO has mentioned that Alex North adapted his score into a 4 movement ballet piece that was recorded back in the 1990's It runs about 40 minutes and is rather good. Has anyone else know this recording? I don't have this but I have been tempted. Are the arrangements similar to those used in the film? Does it offer very much that the Goldsmith doesn't? It sounds fairly close, but clearly it's been adapted for a different sized group, but the music is there. Ford A. Thaxton
