The Red Pony is a great score! I'd easily buy it if a label put it out.

Wonderful ! I hope it will be your label.

I too would like to see Copland's THE RED PONY issued on a Varese CD. The Varese LP had a beautiful cover and since Varese did issue it years ago I would think it would be less costly for them to issue a CD now. Sales should cross-over to classical buyers too!

Speaking of "cross-over to classical buyers", remember not too many months ago Varese gave us MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION.

As we have seen, several older Varese titles have been re-issued by other labels so it's a fact that Varese does not own EVERY single older title they put out on LP or CD from years ago. Just because they have not released THE RED PONY doesn't mean that they are purposely avoiding time periods. Keep in mind several factors could be playing here. Maybe this is a rights issue, maybe no one who's who owns what? Maybe Varese is working on it? Maybe another label is working on it? Maybe us or another label is looking for tapes and researching? Who only knows. Don't assume we avoid certain time periods, that is not true at all, but generally speaking 1970's and newer seem to do better in general, especially that 1980's and 1990's time period smile

Exceptions to the rule of course and one of them is what I'm listening to right now The Ten Commandments from Intrada!

Enjoy THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. Different discs have been played at my house since Wednesday.
I appreciate your feedback on THE RED PONY. If the upper echelon at Varese ever ask for your opinion, please be supportive. I want very much the words, WE - HEAR - YOU to be meaningful.
Thanks for"listening". Peace.

Varese has re-issued on CD a number of LPs from the Warner Bros. catalog in recent years. We have gotten:

Boulevard Nights (Lalo Schifrin)
Honkytonk Man (various country)
One on One (Charles Fox)
Sharky’s Machine (pop songs)

Coming soon is City Heat (Lennie Niehaus).

One thing these releases all have in common is that they generally include some popular tunes in their tracklists. Some others in this vein that Varese might consider are:

Dusty and Sweets McGee (various pop)
Night Shift (Burt Bacharach, pop songs)
Over the Edge (various rock)
Rustler’s Rhapsody (various country)

But I'd like to see Varese take a chance on a few orchestral scores that were on Warner LPs:

The Arrangement (David Amram)
The Big Bounce (Mike Curb)
The Bobo (Francis Lai)
Ecco (Riz Ortolani)
Harlow (Nelson Riddle, Al Ham)
Last Summer (John Simon)
The Learning Tree (Gordon Parks)
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (Rod McKuen)
Ode to Billy Joe (Michel Legrand)
The Shining (Wendy Carlos, others)
The Swarm [original LP] (Jerry Goldsmith)

And not forgetting the Warner LP, The Outlaw Josey Wales (Jerry Fielding), not extended of course, but a good album & never released on CD.

Oooh, if it is really digital to CD I'd like a CD of Cliff Eidelman's Open Window. smile

Y'know DMD is a fine fellow. He gave me an excellent explanation a few months ago as to why Varese avoids certain time periods when scores were composed. He said the costs are high and they don't sell well these days. Yet I am happy to see his excitement and pleasure when other labels are willing to take the risk and release scores from the 50's and 60's.

Cody, we don't avoid any period for this series. If something is available that makes sense, we will try to acquire, expand where/if possible and release.

I can say with confidence we are looking at everything that everybody requests.

The initial posting called it "a new semi-monthly music series." That would mean twice a month. But I suspect that they really meant "bimonthly," which would mean every other month.
