So I recently re-watched The Conjuring, a solid, above-average haunted house flick, sandwiched between its prequel/spin-off Annabelle and its sequel The Conjuring 2.

I thought about getting into a whole discussion of the metaphysics of these movie-verse, which keeps growing with a 2nd Annabelle coming and a spin-off based on Conjuring 2's antagonist and probably a Conjuring 3 as well.

But instead I'll just start with a question about Conjuring 2. Just to make sure I'm getting it right:

So . . . the whole thing was an elaborate trap for the Warrens, an attempt by a super powerful demon to shake their faith and kill them. The demon used a ghost as a front for a haunting on a continent where its targets were not . . . and then cunningly appeared to Lorraine in a premonition to give her precisely the word she would later need to effortlessly dispatch it? Am I understanding this correctly?

Also why was this demon interested in the Warrens in the first place? Given that this appears to be a personal, targeted attack -- even though they hadn't met this demon before, to their knowledge -- why did it give a hoot about them? It feels like there's something missing here. Or else, more likely, was this just going to be a haunted house movie until Wan decided too late in the game that he needed to make it more personal for the protagonists?

Is it less stupid than it seems to me? Did I miss something important?
