Hi,

When you are planning to want to get the score for something and try to release it, what is the biggest hurdle? Is it getting the composer's permission, getting the rights from the company that owned the score and did a release previously, finding the score itself, or the cost of doing a project? I was wondering about this after you responded to me in the Black Friday thread about BHC taking 6 years.

Also are obstacles different when you are working on a score that has never been released (Less than Zero, Galaxy Quest, Days of Thunder) than an expansion (Fugitive, First Knight, Die Hard, Speed, Broken Arrow)?

Thanks for any info and for the great releases, can't wait to double up with Cliffhanger and Twister on Tuesday.

P.S. If you want to tell the BHC story of why it took 6 years or any other stories, like getting Die Hard from Varese, that would be cool too.

I'm excited for that documentary. It would be great if some international producers could also be interviewed, from the likes of Music Box or Quartet.

Daniele De Gemini/Beat Records would be a big plus if you're looking for an international take. He's been doing this stuff since the 70s.

Much like one's children every one is different. For example with the Beverly Hills Cop releases it was a lot of start-and-stop going on because of the proposed Beverly Hills Cop 4 that was supposed to happen and then the TV series and then Beverly Hills Cop 4 again and finally Paramount just said "you know what go ahead and release it." We also had to get Jerry Bruckheimer to sign off on the project as well as figure out the deal points for the artists on the song side of things.

Varese did not have Die Hard in perpetuity. Most of their Club titles are not perp deals. That's why Predator is with Intrada or Kritzerland released the Herrmann stuff. There are some titles from their limited edition line that they do have in perp like Escape from Planet of the Apes or their newest batches like The Abyss, Predator 2, Starship Troopers etc

The most difficult part of the process is always the legal aspect and trying to find the time for the legal departments to dig up ancient contracts for the projects for the composers sometimes singers sometimes the actors sometimes the filmmakers. You need to make sure all T's are crossed and I's are dotted. These legal departments are overworked and drastically understaffed to handle the new projects let alone dig through the archives so their Studio can make a few thousand dollars on a score release to let's say Less Than Zero. It truly is a miracle that anything comes out.

I am working on that. It is not easy to set up but I am intending to have those International Labels (if they agree to be interviewed) find a small team of two (camera and audio) to film the interview based on my specifications and provide the interview questions. Then they can send me the raw footage and sound back to me.

Now that I am getting some early attention and spreading the word about this film, I am going to begin a second attempt at getting some questions from fans regarding the process of releasing a soundtrack that they would like to have answered. While I have a pretty in-depth set already, I am opening up the chance for fans to submit questions from which I will choose to ask.

As LLL has already answered your question, each score has a completely different set of circumstances surrounding it.

Thanks for mentioning this. Much appreciated. I am actually redesigning the cover and it looks way better and is much more of a visual narrative than this one. Once I am done with shooting and editing the photography for it I will update the image.

Next up to be interviewed is BSX featuring Ford A. Thaxton and Mark Bannon. There are so many more to be interviewed, its just getting people to make time with their busy schedules to sit down for an interview. It is a great adventure nonetheless.

Nice but we need to have Mike Matessino interviewed as well for this project!

I have already reached out to him and he is taking some convincing to get on board.

What it comes down to is simply whether or not that person WANTS to be in the documentary. Not everyone feels comfortable giving interviews especially on-camera. For many of these professionals it comes down to their own time and personal reasons if they decline. I have had only one decline so far. That is their choice. Each person I have interviewed so far have recommended others I should interview and I am reaching out to them as well.

If Mr. Matessino has the time to participate in an interview, that would be awesome. At the moment he is busy over the next few months. I have impressed upon him how excited people would be to have him appear in an interview and I feel he is wanting to do it but it comes down to the time and whether he feels comfortable giving the interview.

Just wanted to know if anyone has any insight to the status of Score Trek? Is it still happening? smile
