BLADE RUNNER 2049---director Denis Villeneuve (ARRIVAL) said he emphasized practical special effects over CGI for the sequel, "I’m very old school. I wish I had the chance to do my aliens as animatronics. That was my dream at the beginning [of ARRIVAL]. We were dreaming to put them in a gigantic aquarium with gigantic beasts that would be moved by puppeteers. But sadly, it would have been too expensive. I hate green screens. It sucks out all my energy. I get depressed. I have an admiration for directors who can work with that on a daily basis. For BLADE RUNNER, we tried our best to do as much as possible in-camera, building everything.”

BLACK HOLE---sci fi movie underway about a team of scientists, soldiers and astronauts who try to prevent the destruction of the Earth after a black hole enters the solar system which causes monstrous meteorites, gigantic volcanoes and a second Ice Age. Brad Peyton (SAN ANDREAS) is the director.

SCARFACE---Peter Berg (PATRIOTS DAY, LONE SURVIVOR) and David Mackenzie (HELL OR HIGH WATER) are the top candidates to replace Antoine Fuqua as the director of the remake movie.

Regarding Blade Runners Denis Villeneuve and the use a "practical special effects", this is refreshing to see or hear that other current members of this generations younger directors push to use more optical effects than CGI. Nolan did it with "Interstellar" and while you may debate the merits of that film overall, I think it adds to the overall film going effect of making the experience look more tangible and organic. Yes, there are CGI effects that boggle the mind with their realism(the creature effects from "Snow White and the Huntsman" are extraordinary) but most of the time you can tell it's computer and not model or optical. The overabundance and glut of CGI to me have made special effects less special.

For THE BLACK HOLE...ugh. Just another disaster movie...when will they end?

If David Mackenzie directs a new SCARFACE, I may actually go and see it. His HELL OR HIGH WATER was one of the best movies last year, easily.
