http://empirenews.net/man-with-worlds-largest-dvd-collection-cant-find-a-thing-to-watch/

I haven't counted, but I must have under 300 titles all told. For some reason, I take more pleasure in owning my favorite old TV series than any movie. TV is more intimately wrapped up with childhood memories, apparently. But a lot of my must-have titles are films, for sure.

I've racked up more DVDs and Blu-rays than I can watch at present. I'm like a squirrel saving up acorns. When I retire and have tons of time on my hands, I'll be hitting those shelves.

Is that about where you are? I'm sure I'm one type of collector and there are others. But I definitely like owning a copy rather than streaming it. Even during the VHS era, I bought them, never rented.

Hah. I'm in the same boat as you. My wife has accused me of being a hoarder, with my piles of CDs Blu-rays, and DVDs.

I have four TV series from the 60s and 70s.

Star Trek
The Outer Limits
Space:1999 (first season only)
Battlestar Galactica

I have around 125 movies on DVD/BR. Those are enough to keep me entertained the rest of my life. Retirement may be coming up soon for me. smile

Adam, why no Twilight Zone? This series is what blu-ray was made for.
I replaced DVDs with Blu-rays and have a smaller collection, maybe around 100 or less? Like my soundtrack collection, I try to keep it at a limit. I mostly watch my favorite television series than watching a movie. I guess its hard for me to sit 2 hours at a time anymore. No more Lord of the Rings Extended Cuts for me. Bring me an episode of Twilight Zone or Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Oh dear, I have a LOT of TV box sets, DVDs:

The Saint, complete b/w seasons (a big box)
The Outer Limits 1&2
Callan the colour episodes
Have Gun Will Travel S1
The Man From UNCLE S1&2
Wagon Train S1&2
The Adventures Of Robin Hood S3 (that's the old Richard Green stuff)
Department S
Dream On S1&2
& so many more, plus a shedload of American comedy series (including the complete Larry Sanders Show)

Blu-rays:

4x shows that I haven't seen (yet) Spartacus (complete), Black Sails S1-3, Fargo S1 & Deadwood complete
Californication complete (from Germany)
Batman
The Twilight Zone complete
Star Trek complete (original & TNG)
House (that big box)
Rome
Game Of Thrones
Band Of Brothers
The Pacific
The Sweeney S1
The Prisoner
The Avengers S1-3
Bones (complete when I buy the last two series) a mix of DVD & Blu-ray, I love this show
...& so many more.

My excuse is that a lot of these box sets didn't cost me anymore that a single CD soundtrack release (& some less), & I hardly buy any soundtracks these days, & I have to spend my spare cash on something besides booze & chocolate. And of course a lot of movies, mostly on Blu-ray these days (I've become a complete HD snob), a lot of them are from my two favourite film decades, 50s & 60s.

The thing is, I live alone, I'm retired, & even I don't have the time to watch this lot, so how anyone with something like a busy life can keep up with it, I don't know. But it is enjoyable just owning all this stuff.

2,300 features, a few thousand shorts, cartoons and trailers. TV shows on the back wall.

Is that for real, Ray? You have all that on 16mm? Where and how do you find an entire TV series on 16mm? Are they old prints that TV stations used to license? How much does the average feature film cost on 16mm? How many projectors do you own, and do you have any anamorphic prints and lenses to properly project wide-screen films?

The only entire series I have (first season only - second season was a dog) is THE ABBOTT AND COSTELLO SHOW. However, I do have 34 of the original COLUMBO's on film (they call came from Australia!), including the pilot feature and RANSOM FOR A DEAD MAN., the latter which has not been released domestically on DVD.

Either old tv prints or military-library prints; some I had newly struck. Avg features go for about 150 today. Most I paid was over $1,400 for WHITE SAVAGE with Maria Montez (mint lowfade color). I have about 30 projectors and variable anamorphic lenses for CinemaScope and WarnerScope.

That's a hobby that makes we video collectors look like pikers.

Just curious... do you have PLANET OF THE APES on 16mm and in anamorphic Panavision, or is that not to your taste or too recent a movie? I could name other movies but I won't bother you more.

I had a few seasons of a few shows on DVD but then I figured I'm never going to watch them again and got rid of them. I also unloaded 80% of my video game collection and 60% of my DVDs leaving only a small number I think I may watch again at some point. When I get around to playing Lost Odyssey again I'll be surprised if the Xbox 360 will still turn on and work. Most of the video games I have take so long to complete that I doubt I will ever get around to playing them again. (40+ hours)

I probably won't re-watch tv series for the simple reason that my husband has no interest in re-watching movies let alone TV series so I really have to want to watch it more than other things I have to enjoy when he is doing other things. But maybe if we get around to re-watching Game of Thrones I hope we will be able to do so by streaming everything.

Adam, why no Twilight Zone? This series is what blu-ray was made for.

I'm not as familiar with TZ as the other shows I mentioned. In the late 70s I recorded onto VHS that great episode "Living Doll" with Telly Savalas as the abrasive step-father to a little girl who has a Talking Tina doll. I watched it many times and loved Bernard Herrmann's score. Other than that I can only recall a few memorable episodes. I may get it in the future if there is a great sale on the box set.

I've been thinking about upgrading The Twilight Zone. I have 19 episodes on the original DVD run, including most of my favorites. These old DVDs were made during the CRT era, but still look really good as upscaled on the Blu-ray player and flat screen TV. (That's an advantage vintage TV has over films, on the oldest DVDs: you never run into a non-anamorphic widescreen image that's been boxed into the center of the screen like a postage stamp.)

Right now, The Twilight Zone is about $50 on DVD versus $70 on BD. I haven't decided what to do. You're saying the BD is bedazzling?

I waited a decade for Blu Rays so I held back on buying DVD's. But now I have to choose scores over films so don't have many Blu Rays either. Life is full of sacrifices I guess.

Zap,
Twilight Zone on Blu-Ray, bedazzling....well probably not but they did do a pretty good job on this series. I am not a expert when talking technical comparisons and Definitive Edition DVD set a few years back probably will be suffice for most. But the added extra bonus features and the fact that TZ is my all time favorite show, I'm a little biased. The new $70 I paid is far better than the $120 or so of the older price, its worth the upgrade in my opinion. And this probably will be my last upgrade. Unless I actually get lost into......... The Twilight Zone.

The Twilight Zone on Blu-Ray looks STUNNING, one of the best high-def restorations of a classic TV show I can think of. Any amount of money you spend on it is worth it.

All this talk, plus this review I found, is basically sealing my fate. I've got the Blu-ray lust now.
