He always seemed inexplicably smug, to me. Especially for someone who wrote the horrendous screenplay for the film, THE OSCAR.

Yeah, he was whoring himself out on that project. Unfortunately, in this world of wonderful humanity, a person must have money in order to take care of themselves. Nice, right?

He also worked on the screenplay for VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. Oh, what some people will do for money!

Ellison is a curmudgeon and, I think, a misanthrope -- my kind of guy!

I don't disagree with anything you all are saying about Ellison, and I'm no longer interested in hearing him pontificate. But for anyone with an interest in science fiction, and I would say contemporary literature, his fiction is well worth sampling at least. And since it's all short stories, it's easy to sample. The art stands apart from the man.

As a fan of much of the art of Roman Polanski, Woody Allen, Leni Riefenstahl, Otto Preminger, and much of the music of Richard Strauss, and the screen personas of John Wayne and Charlton Heston, I agree with you.

I just watched it for the first time a few weeks ago and had fun with it. It is bad, but nowhere near as bad as it's reputation. It's an incredibly trashy film.

Ellison claims the producers were rewriting it as he was handing in script pages.

While I find THE OSCAR, completely unwatchable, nothing could be further from the truth where VALLEY OF THE DOLLS is concerned.

We WONDERED how you'd feel about that, PhillyJay - tho we also wonder how that entire miasma woulda turned out if he'd gotten McQueen and Falk as originally envisioned.

As for der 'Valley' - sorry. We got nooooo interest in sacrificing a coupla non-refundable hours at this Act III stage of our life frown ...

Exactly. He is an unbearable prick, but lots of his fiction is highly recommended.

For that matter, some of his non fiction as well. Both volumes of The Glass Teat are fine, written back when he was still full of his own shit, but had more of a sense of humor about it razz

Yo - Getta Flamin' GRIP, Willya Department:

roll eyes Y'know, we get SUCH a kick outta how everyone feels so compelled to point out
what bastards or bitches certain figures are, as if many of those they admire in their
professional capacity are less than luminary personally (as many of who had the
misfortune to 'work' with them can attest).

Methinks the criteria of their personal terminally-insecure or arrogant temperament oughta be adjusted - or you'd never see or read ANYONE roll eyes
