First, I must thank Nic Raine , James Fitzpatrick and Leigh Phillips as well as The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra for their outstanding contributions in releasing this music.
This was, for me, the very first time I'd heard any of this music that Jerry Goldsmith wrote so long ago, early in his career. And I do love Goldsmith's music, very much. But, this album just didn't 'involve' me somehow. I'm no expert, I listened to the music, EAGER and WANTING to like it on it's initial spin, but it just didn't happen. I'm almost certain to be the ONLY person with these feelings about it, but I honestly checked to see if I had the player on 'shuffle', but it was not. O.K., you can hate me if you guys want, but this was my opinion.
The one track I did enjoy, was 'MR. GEORGE' (Suite).

Will there be any nervous angular longhair jazz on volume two, like the music JG wrote for "The Twilight Zone" (TV show) and "City of Fear?"

Goldsmith's music is so expansive and plentiful, with changing styles and approaches through the years. Scores that people may enjoy from his 90s period might not sound that great for folks who discovered his music in the 70s or earlier. Music from his very early TV work is very sparse and lacks the lush symphonics of his movie scores, like The Blue Max or Star Trek, so it might connect as much. I am not a fan of his jazz-period, heard in some of his Twilight Zone work, Flint, Sebastian, etc. I do appreciate how he could do so much with so little, with those tiny ensembles. I am looking froward to Thriller, and I hope I like it!

Very glad to see this CD is selling so well and a Volume 2 is planned!

Any new Jerry Goldsmith is always welcomed, especially from his early years.

It is an excellent album, both in sound and performance. As others have mentioned, I am amazed at what he could get out of such a small ensemble. His genius was budding and I could really hear it coming to the fore. My favorites are "Hay-Fork and Bill-Hook" and "Mr George."
I've got my credit card out for the next volume.
Thank you, James, Nic, and Leigh. You've got a new best friend.

This arrived in the post this morning. I was quite excited when opening it, but I don't want to simply dip into it for ten minutes. I need to put aside the time and set the mood. I might not have the chance until the weekend.

In the run-up to this release I'd been watching the specific episodes of the series, some of which I'd seen on TV in the early 1980s. It's great stuff, and I was always struck by how brilliantly inventive the scores were. I purchased this CD with very little hesitation - and I've been critical of one or two of Tadlow's earlier releases. However, I'm really looking forward to hearing what they do with the chamber orchestra. I've been pretty impressed by the video clips available of the recording sessions.

It would be nice if we could manage to have a thread (perhaps this one?) just devoted to people's thoughts on the music on the CD, without speculation about Volume 2. The "Awesome" thread got a bit derailed, inevitably so because it was started before anyone had heard it. I think I might have contributed to the messy derailment, but I'll try not to let that happen again. Of course, people can and will do as they want anywhere.

So there you go. Those are my first impressions!

It's always tricky to judge music by first impressions. With me it's usually like this, if I really like music on first hearing (like some catchy pop-tunes) I tend to get bored with it very fast and can't hear it anymore after a few times. On the other hand, the music I play most often usually grows on you slowly. These sometimes don't do much hearing them for the first time. So I wouldn't judge a CD just on a single spin. But perhaps the chamber character just isn't your thing, and like James said, each to their own. I really like this CD, and will buy a volume two.

Thanks. Does this mean that Goldsmith did not write any nervous angular longhair jazz for "Thriller," or does it mean that you will not record it if it exists?

Goldsmith's "Twilight Zone" jazz cues and "City of Fear," incidentally, are easily in my top ten all-time Goldsmith scores, along with "Flint" x 2, "Chinatown," "Planet of the Apes," "Seconds," and a few others that I am forgetting now. I check out after "Capricorn 1" and "The Swarm."

Seconds is jazzy? Not to my ears. If you like Seconds so much, I think you'd be likely to find some of his Thriller work interesting.

Seconds is jazzy?

It looks like you are the only person in the thread who said that "Seconds is jazzy," unless you are quoting someone on my ignore list.

No, but you keep asking about "nervous angular longhair" jazzy stuff of Goldsmith's since that seems to be your favorite type of Goldsmith music, but then among your top 10 favorite Goldsmiths you listed Seconds...

Well, does Goldsmith have eight more scores that sound like "City of Fear" or the "Twilight Zone" jazz themes? Because if he does, I will happily buy them and place them in my top ten with the aforementioned scores.

Also, while I would not describe "Seconds" categorically as "jazzy," it does contain some jazzy elements, if one has an expansive view of jazz, and if one takes into account the directions that jazz went into during the postwar years.

Speaking of "Seconds," Tadlow should record it. It is short enough to be paired with a crowd-pleaser.

I've been waiting for some sort of release of Jerry's music for Thriller for many years now never thinking it would ever happen. His earlier work is probably my favorite as he was bursting with youthful creativity and already a damn fine composer. While I was waiting, I extracted the music from the DVD set m&e tracks, a pretty pain staking editing process with mixed results due to effects marring the music at times and the choppy nature of short cues. Thanks to James and Leigh, I got my wish more than answered in this collection of score episodes.

Leigh did an absolutely stellar job of transcribing the audio to a written score reconstruction. The suites and prologues are great representations of the highlights from each score. I really like the addition of the end titles suite from all 6 episodes. That's a real bonus. I can probably retire my season 1 end credits youtube video now. I used to post it every so often on the Facebook Cult of Jerry page.

All in all, this collection is a veritable compendium of future JG scores: you can hear a bit of Planet of the Apes, Poltergeist, Twilight Zone The Movie, The List of Adrian Messenger, The Mephisto Waltz, A Patch of Blue, etc. The somewhat chamber style of the music makes it very transparent so that you can really see into Goldsmith's compositional inner workings.

My personal favorites are the first 3: THE GRIM REAPER, HAY-FORK AND BILL-HOOK and WELL OF DOOM (thanks to my dark nature), but all are great, with such a variety of musical styles on display. So glad to hear there will be a volume 2!

Thanks again James and Leigh!!!

P.S. I've listened to the CD 3 times within the first 24 hours I've had it and appreciate it more on each listen!
