I am travelling to London, Paris, Rome & Milano in August/September. Can anyone recommend the best CD shops in these cities (including 2nd-hand shops).

If anyone was coming to Sydney, I would suggest Fish Fine Music in Town Hall arcade for mainly Classical, JB Hi-Fi (various stores in the city) for a cross section of genres and Lawson's in Pitt St for a pretty good (and now the only one I think) 2nd-hand CD shop

I don't know about second hand shops but there are no shops I can recommend to you in London which sell new CDs. There is a large HMV in Oxford Street but it only sells soundtracks you can easily get elsewhere.

Sadly the days of specialist shops like 58 Dean Street and That's Entertainment are long gone.

Nevertheless have a great trip. We have some great weather here at the moment!

What about Reckless Records in Berwick Street? Are they still open?

If it's the shop I'm thinking off, quite a large shop with a good stock & an interesting soundtrack section...they closed & moved over the road, a much smaller shop, with a much smaller selection. There is another s/h record shop in Berwick Street, small & a bit grubby. In the last few months I have gone uptown to buy new classical/pop/soundtrack releases (I do try & support shops), but in all cases I've come home empty handed & bought online, that's just how it is with CDs now.

But...London's a great city, lots to see, & if you're there on a Saturday give Portobello Road Market a go, a great way to spend a sunny Saturday.

I suppose I'm keen to go to any shop that is recommended (if I have the time) because mailing costs to Australia these days are somewhat prohibitive. Amazon prices look amazing until you get to that 4th or 5th screen of the order and then go "crap" that just way too much lol. Interested in a good Classical CD shop also...

All you need to do is check on-line here.. @Go-visit-London, it gives you a map + information on every cd shop available.

Most of my fondest shopping memories are from used book and music stores. Finding a vintage, long out-of-print item that meant a lot me, but was cheap because "nobody is interested in that anymore" -- that's as good as shopping gets.
