This week marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. Important to me as it was probably the first James Bond movie I saw, or at least the first one I have a memory of being taken to by my parents, which was most likely not until later in the summer or fall of '67.

For this reason, plus that I like its score and theme song better than any other Bond, add to that the Japanese setting, plus the far-out Sci-Fi themed scenario -- which is so absurd it's almost a cartoon -- YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE remains my favorite of all Bonds. I don't argue that it's anywhere the best, just the one I like best, followed very closely by GOLDFINGER, which I probably first saw in a reissue double-bill Bond in the next couple years.

Anyway, please comment on your opinions of YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, 50 years old this week.

Yeah, it's a good 'un. Great set design, great John Barry soundtrack (Bond Averts World War Three is one of my top Bond cues), I didn't think I had the Blu-ray, but I have, so I might watch it tonight. I don't know why they disguised Bond as Japanese & had him marry a Japanese girl, it didn't add anything to the plot, but it was probably in the book, & it did have some great Barry music. I read somewhere ages ago that the studio were a bit disappointed that it didn't do better business, & that was the fault of Thunderball. Everyone loved Goldfinger, & looked forward to Thunderball, but they were a wee bit disappointed with that one, & You Only Live Twice suffered a bit because of that.

...& Charles Gray plays a goodie for a change (I think, it's been so long since I've seen it).

It's probably my favourite Connery Bond. It has some great action sequences, fabulous production design, a good baddie and, incredibly since it is John Barry, I even like the score.

There are a few things which are pretty cringe-worthy. The whole thing with Helga taking Bond up in a plane just to try and kill him is ridiculous, as is Bond's Japanese disguise. And some of the model choppers in the Little Nellie sequence are very bad (which is a shame because the live action footage is superb). But overall the film is quintessential 007 and a darn good romp.

I'd take YOLT over the bloated, boring and overly serious current Bond movies any day.

All way's thought this was a weak part of the film. over 35 minutes.

Why does Bond even need to be married.? & devoted to turn Japanese, then training him to become a ninja.? Bond is a highly trained agent, an expert-killer.

"I have my curiosity, Bond-san. What is little Nellie?"

I always thought Donald Pleasance was the worst Blofeld, hamming it up in every scene. I did like Aki's Toyota 2000G.T. convertible roadster with the television screen (one of the best, if overlooked Bond cars). This was a custom model, since the 2000G.T. was a coupe. though possessing fine looks and performance, didn't sell well, and the film didn't do the same for the car as "Goldfinger" did for the Aston Martin D.B.5. coupe, which was a shame. Nancy Sinatra did two versions of the main title song (the other was the cover that made the bottom half of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart) and the instrumental "Twice Is The Only Way To Live" was only available on the "Ten Golden Years" 2 L.P. set (but is available on the "You Only Live Twice" Expanded Edition as one of the bonus tracks. This is the best instrumental version of the song).

I never heard that. Adjusted for inflation, Thunderball grossed over one billion dollars. That was even more than Goldfinger took in. The period of 1964-1967 was the peak of Bond-mania around the world. The series has never again reached those heights (again, adjusted for inflation).Thunderball had to be getting a lot of repeat business.

i had the car. i think it had a Bond with a gun and aki driving. the boot had a dial that if you turned it pinged out missiles.

You can say that again, Bill...

There was a model of the 2000GT - Airfix? - that didn't do anything except the wheels went round, but I thought it was the coolest thing ever when my brother made it from the kit.

The Toyota was an awesome car and it was this and Simon Templar's Volvo that made me always covet a white sports car.

As it's you, at great expense, I've sourced something for your birthday this year, because you said you liked the Toyota.....

When my family went to see the movie in 1967 -- at the now a mega church Calderone Theater in Hempstead, Long Island -- at the end of this scene when the black car gets dropped in the ocean, my sister said: "They should have rolled up their windows." Many in the audience laughed. She was only six years old then.

Any Bond movie with a screenplay by Roald Dahl is aces with me!

(It's also the first Bond I remember seeing at the movies as a little kid - a drive-in double feature with Thunderball. (I think Thunderball was the second feature, 'cause I don't remember much from that experience after the jet-pack opening.)

"You Only Live Twice opened in UK cinemas 50 years ago today (on the 13th in America), and to celebrate the release of the biggest Bond of all Cinema Retro's September issue pays tribute to this cinematic extravaganza with a 32-page 'Film in Focus' special. Apart from Matthew Field and Ajay Chowdhury's interview with Nancy Sinatra (a rare in-print interview about her involvement with the film), we feature many rare and never-seen-before stills and behind-the-scenes photos, features on props and collectibles, and exclusive interviews with Karin Dor, Leslie Bricusse, Julie Rogers (the singer who was originally contracted to record the title song) and Mark Cerulli catches up with Tsai Chin for her memories of the film. And that's not all - Bond composer David Arnold discusses how the music to You Only Live Twice changed his life forever, and we have an exclusive interview with the late Ken Wallis, the creator of the Little Nellie gyrocopter, who discusses the helicopter accident (with photos) that caused cameraman John Jordan to lose his foot; plus Raymond Benson meets 'Bond Girls' Akiko Wakabayashi and Mie Hama, and Peter Lamont explains the logistics of building the massive volcano set. A not-to-be-missed issue!

Cinema Retro #39 is published this coming September (October in the US), and is the last issue of the 2017 season #13 subscription. Make sure you subscribe or renew for this season! Issues #’s 37 and 38 ship immediately, followed by the #39 in the fall."

no payment was received by me for this endorsement!

To anyone here who actually OWNS the 2000gt model that was sold in 1967 : you have a very valuable, rare artifact in your possession!

My take:

YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE was released 1 and a half years after TB (11/66).
It wasn't going to do as much business no matter how good or bad .

CASINO ROYALE (an 'official ' 007 film) and two FLINT films had come out during that time. OUR MAN FLINT even featured a volcano lair!!!!!
So, the competition was fierce.

My pre-adolescent friends loved the film and thought it was the best 007 ever.

As an adult one cant overlook how hokey the script is.
Yes, its a grand spectacle and terrifically entertaining with JB's all-time best score but it's ridiculous!
CHeck the IMDB section on the film labeled "goofs" to see just how ridiculous.

But, God help me I love it. I do love it so!
