Sorry if a thread dedicated to this composer already exists but I couldn't locate it through the means of the research engine. Anyway, even though it might well go by unnoticed, his brand new score to the movie GAUGUIN, directed by Edouard Deluc, is now available on CD and as download courtesy of of the Milan label.

Since I heard for the first time THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES, I've been hooked by the sheer melancholy of his music and went on buying further CD's (THE ROAD, MARS, the double anthology WHITE LUNAR), all co-signed with Nick Cave. In the case of GAUGUIN, like happened for instance with another French movie called MUSTANG (2015), Ellis, who now lives near Paris and therefore gets such assignments, signed the music alone. I must say I didn't like the GAUGUIN movie that much but the score is made of Ellis' unmistikably fascinating sad sound, entirely performed by himself. "...I was instantly attracted to the space there seemed to be for the musical element of the story. We agreed on a minimal sound palette built around my violin and alto flute with the added elements of atmosphères generated by electronic loops. Edouard wanted music of a poetic nature that became more dramatic as the narrative shifted through the gears. I was hoping that the violin would indeed become the internal voice of Gauguin and tell his internal story", he explains in the booklet. Mind the CD also contains three tracks by Cave and Ellis from 2009 as well as a few traditional chants from Tahiti featured in the film.
