October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As most of you know, I lost a beloved family member to this disease this year. I can almost guarantee that most, if not all of you know someone who is battling or has won or lost the battle with this horrible disease. Cancer in any form is horrible but I want to speak about Breast Cancer.
Breast Cancer is NOT just a woman's disease. It strikes men too. Back in the late 70's, the husband of a co-worker discovered a small lump on his chest that extended to his armpit. He had a biopsy and was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a subsequent partial mastectomy and chemotherapy. I recall being shocked that a man could develop this but soon realized that it was not uncommon. I still keep in touch with this dear co-worker and she and her husband celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary last year.
My message is this - early detection. Breast Cancer is treatable in the early stages. It is no guarantee but it is one of the best weapons we have. Bug your loved ones to get the exams and about self-examination. Men, you are not immune.

Edw, this is a good message to all. I have a friend whose husband contracted breast cancer about 17 years ago. He put up a valiant battle, but died after 16 years. Breast cancer strikes both men and women, and early detection is essential.
