I finally retired on July 29th 2017. I spent 22 years with the County of Alameda, California, That followed my retirement from the Navy December 31, 1993, after 23 1/2 years.

Five weeks ago -- following months of packing, sorting, tossing and donating -- I moved from Oakland, California, to Johnston, South Carolina.

My belongings were delivered October 14th.

Almost everything is in storage, but easily accessible. I am, thus far, very much enjoying small town life. This town has two traffic lights. It's a very low-stress environment, and I have relatives and friends within arm's length (so to speak).

I have not retired from my love of film music and movies and discussing same. I simply have to carve out special time from my life of leisure to discuss it here and in other venues.

I wanted anyone interested to know that I had not dropped off the face of the earth and will be around.

You mean you're going to be sitting on the porch in a straw Panama, spittin' baccy and advising Sheriff Brando on the likeliest hideout for ol' Bob Redford.

I say you start a paper.

Glad to hear that you'll be around more now. Enjoy retirement, music, movies, etc. I just got back from spending a few days in Manhattan, and while I found it an exciting city, I love my small town environment and its warmth. Hope you do too.

Ron, have you thought about how to structure your days? I'm afraid if I retired now without figuring out a self-made schedule, my Internet addiction would swallow me whole.

Ron, congratulations! First and foremost, thank you for your service to the country. And, welcome to South Carolina! I'm about 90 minutes away in Spartanburg. I'm not that familiar with Johnston, but have passed through a time or two back in the 90s.
Enjoy! - jack

What an anticlimax. From the title I thought you either became a Starship captain or went transgender. mad

You mean you're going to be sitting on the porch in a straw Panama, spittin' baccy and advising Sheriff Brando on the likeliest hideout for ol' Bob Redford.

Speaking of Panama, I was talking to a random old guy at Walmart who's selling his house and retiring there because you get the most bang for your buck...when you're not getting extorted by Uzi-toting police.

Congrats Ron. So happy to hear your good news. You may be joined in a few years by my husband and I (well not on your front porch but perhaps in the same state). We are leaving this state behind after retirement and are headin' south. Too damn expensive and cold here.

Enjoy!

Edit: To second jackfu, yes, thank you for your proud service to this country Ron.

U've more than earned it.

U definitively deserve it.

Just promise us one teeny-weeny thing:

You'll save us some of those grits and collard greens!!! wink

I am totally eating collards and grits!!!

Most restaurants offer green beans, limas, corn and collards. There is also mac and cheese nearly everywhere every day.

That said, there are many pleasures to look forward to, especially fresh fish on Friday and hamburgers at the Edgefield pool room on Saturdays.

“Y’all” - You’re off to a great start, Ron! Depending on how far you want to take it, there are lots of other cool Southernisms. Yontu (“Do you want to?”), jeatchyet (“Did ya eat yet?”), nawjew (“No did you?”), up-air (“Up there”), down-air (“Down there”) tar instead of tire, “Ye” (you), etc., are fairly common. G-dropping is almost universal here, like goin’ (going). Oh, I almost forgot “Yonder”, which is a place other than here that no one seems able to define but is understood. And, not to be critical, but if you ask someone to describe an event that occurred to them, be prepared for a rendering of the entire history of everything that led up to their event.
If you like meat-and-three home-style cooking you won’t have much trouble finding it, as you’ve seen already. Buffet restaurants are enormously popular, and you’ll see lots of enormous customers at these as well. Wait staff (females, anyway) will likely call you “Sweetie” or “Baby”, occasionally “Honey” or “Hun”, (not “Hon”, like you hear in Northern states), and guys will likely call you “Bud” or “Buddy”. “Yassir” (Yes, sir) is common.
And if you’ve never experienced it before, don’t let anyone take you on a Snipe hunt.
Lastly, I don't know how it is in other states, but here you will find that your Navy service will be highly respected and appreciated.
I wish you all the best!

jakfu: I was born (in Rock Hill) and raised (in Johnston and Greenville) for most of my young life. Left SC when I joined the Navy in 1970.

It's a major change from Oakland, California, I can tell you!!!!!

"Peach Capital of the World", apparently, according to Wiki. It doesn't mention you - yet!

Best of luck for the return home. Hope it goes better than it did for Jack Carter.

Oh, sorry, I didn't know you were from here! So you're back home! Welcome back!

Congratulations on making such a big change.

Now that you have retired in a small town in The South:

On the minus side, you now have to deal with mosquitoes! smile

On the plus side, you are probably paying low rent, have lots more space, and (having retired from 40+ years in government/military work) you are rolling in pension. You're probably using OOP FSM liner notes to light your cigars!

Best wishes, Ron.
