I finally retired on July 29th 2017. I spent 22 years with the County of Alameda, California, That followed my retirement from the Navy December 31, 1993, after 23 1/2 years. Five weeks ago -- following months of packing, sorting, tossing and donating -- I moved from Oakland, California, to Johnston, South Carolina. My belongings were delivered October 14th. Almost everything is in storage, but easily accessible. I am, thus far, very much enjoying small town life. This town has two traffic lights. It's a very low-stress environment, and I have relatives and friends within arm's length (so to speak). I have not retired from my love of film music and movies and discussing same. I simply have to carve out special time from my life of leisure to discuss it here and in other venues. I wanted anyone interested to know that I had not dropped off the face of the earth and will be around.

You mean you're going to be sitting on the porch in a straw Panama, spittin' baccy and advising Sheriff Brando on the likeliest hideout for ol' Bob Redford. I say you start a paper.

Ron, have you thought about how to structure your days? I'm afraid if I retired now without figuring out a self-made schedule, my Internet addiction would swallow me whole.

“Y’all” - You’re off to a great start, Ron! Depending on how far you want to take it, there are lots of other cool Southernisms. Yontu (“Do you want to?”), jeatchyet (“Did ya eat yet?”), nawjew (“No did you?”), up-air (“Up there”), down-air (“Down there”) tar instead of tire, “Ye” (you), etc., are fairly common. G-dropping is almost universal here, like goin’ (going). Oh, I almost forgot “Yonder”, which is a place other than here that no one seems able to define but is understood. And, not to be critical, but if you ask someone to describe an event that occurred to them, be prepared for a rendering of the entire history of everything that led up to their event. If you like meat-and-three home-style cooking you won’t have much trouble finding it, as you’ve seen already. Buffet restaurants are enormously popular, and you’ll see lots of enormous customers at these as well. Wait staff (females, anyway) will likely call you “Sweetie” or “Baby”, occasionally “Honey” or “Hun”, (not “Hon”, like you hear in Northern states), and guys will likely call you “Bud” or “Buddy”. “Yassir” (Yes, sir) is common. And if you’ve never experienced it before, don’t let anyone take you on a Snipe hunt. Lastly, I don't know how it is in other states, but here you will find that your Navy service will be highly respected and appreciated. I wish you all the best!

Congratulations on making such a big change. Now that you have retired in a small town in The South: On the minus side, you now have to deal with mosquitoes! On the plus side, you are probably paying low rent, have lots more space, and (having retired from 40+ years in government/military work) you are rolling in pension. You're probably using OOP FSM liner notes to light your cigars! Best wishes, Ron.
