Hi all, My pal Colin alerted me to this yesterday. He follows a Ray Harryhausen archive podcast. On a recent edition, it is revealed that a 15-minute demo tape recorded by John Barry for Clash of the Titans (1981), has been found in the Harryhausen archive. Clips may be forthcoming. As we know, John was signed to Clash and did record demos but his vision of the movie proved to be apart from Harryhausen's vision and they didn't follow through with the scoring engagement. I have heard on the apocrypha (i.e. this is not reliable information) that the demos were in the vein of The Lion In Winter. True or false? We may find out for sure. Is there any chance any of our intrepid labels might be able to get the full 15-minute demo out as a bonus on something? https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-ray-harryhausen-podcast/id1076346591?mt=2&i=1000402977995 Cheers

I'm glad to finally be vindicated here. For years I brought this up, citing no less than John Barry himself, who recalled doing demos in an interview, yet there was always somebody saying it wasn't true. Pretty please some label put this out. I know it would have to be paired with something. I wonder what else will be unearthed from that collection.....

Would be very interesting to see if these demos provided material for any of Barry's later scores.

The sticky question here is this WHO OWNS THESE DEMOS? Unless Barry was paid for the demos and signed a release, it's more then likely owned by his estate and any release would have to cleared wit them. It's not as cut and dry as you might think it is? Ford A. Thaxton

Would these demos be orchestral (probably not) or just piano mock-ups? They might be small orchestra or ensemble mock-ups. His demos for Once Bitten included piano, saxophone, flute, drums and synth, if I recall correctly. His Body Heat demos can be heard on that score's disc. His Goodbye Lover demos were synthesized but that came later. Anyway, my point is the 'form' indicates his demos tended to be more than piano demos, probably have a few players on them, but will probably not be fully orchestral. Cheers

If John Barry's estate owns the rights then surely Mrs Barry would be delighted for the world to hear her late husband's work?

Yes, that please. Nice bonus for the next Barry re-recording, if another one ever happens. Yavar

I'm pretty sure it would sound something like this- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uk5ivnULvlE Possibly, but I'm looking at the other films he was composing in 1981. Body Heat and The Legend of the Lone Ranger. This was a period where JB's music was more romantic and Clash of the Titans would have been smack in the middle with such works as Somewhere In Time or Francis. His music would sound repetitive as well in films like High Road to China. I'm not saying the music was not good but just similar with the love themes. I can remember seeing a sneak preview of a scene from High Road to China in 1983 and the music was swelling as the planes were flying through the mountains and I knew right away it was John Barry before I had seen any credits. There might be a hint of The Black Hole as well as The Lion In Winter and that is why this 15 minute demo would be fascinating to hear. Perhaps the music was considered too subdued for Ray Harryhausen and Charles Schneer, similar to Raise the Titanic was in much of the underwater scenes, so they chose Laurence Rosenthal instead.

Rights permitting, I'd love a CD or two of just demo cues Barry did for various films (including that piano demo he did for "Dances with Wolves", that still isn't released). And a good look through his personal collection to see what else can be unearthed that we may not know about. I don't care if a good portion if piano only. I don't care if the sound quality varies.
