I tried the Haitink, but for me they just didn't have the fire. You really ought to check out the latest set from Melodiya called All Shostakovich - fantastic things in it including a couple of repeats from the two other sets, but some really fascinating and incredible performances that are new to CD.

Agreed about the Haitink, Mr K, but it seems to me that he plays the notes as written, which could be a decent ground zero for comparison with more exciting readings. And I should indeed check out the Melodiya - and may do, should this year's wage bonus be sufficient! There are people living under my roof who seem to think that food and clothing are more important than CDs.

I love the Haitink 10 and the 12 which for me has more balls than any other recording I've heard (and I bought plenty of that symphony because at one point the Hatink was difficult to find).

Haitink did what I thought was the best version of "The Age Of Gold" with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I remember hearing it on cassette but I don't know if it was ever put out on C.D.

I have two of the Haitink Amsterdam recordings of the symphonies. Their 15th is good but lacks the gripping atmosphere of the world premiere recording from Maxim S.

The 5th though is superb.

Does anyone know of a better recording of this symphony?

I've got a version of the 15th which is a piano reduction, and like most of these it shows some internal dynamics that are otherwise hidden to the under-educated listener. It's not as spectacular as Stone & Hayroudinoff's four-handed version of the 4th, however.

(I'm ducking the question about the best 5th, on the grounds that I firmly believe it's written so perfectly that the best version is whichever one you're listening to at the time.)

BTW, I don't think the Rudolph Barshai set has been mentioned and it's pretty terrific straight down the line.

I have the Previn London Symphony recording as well as the Gergiev recording with the Marinsky orchestra.

While I adore Haitink for the 10th and 12th, I do prefer Gergiev's readings of his 4th, 5th, 6th and 11th Symphonies.

Agreed - I bought a couple of this set when it was being sold for £9.95 in Superdrug. Really.

The other cycle that's worth exploring is Petrenko with the Liverpool Philharmonic, although I haven't heard a huge amount of it as yet.

Great reviews of each individial symphony...

My preference is Leonard Bernstein's 1959 recording with the New York Philharmonic.

I picked up the Gennady Rozhdestvensky recording of the complete Age of Gold at a local bookstore earlier today, but haven't listened to it yet.

Not quite my fave, but awfully good, especially the Japanese import of the SACD edition, which is spectacular.

Yes you are all "musically undereducated" and you should read a book or go on a music appreciation course to have an opinion as impeccable as mine. Not trying to insult you all, just stating fact. Ha ha wink

btw sky arts 6am thurs german violinist Anne Sophie-Mutter plays sibelius and shosty.

I like the 4th movement of the 11th Symphony. I think it was in Billion Dollar Brain for a snippet.

Anyone agree with this harsh assessment of Zoya & The Young Guard - Suites from Film Scores? Are there any recordings to avoid? https://www.allmusic.com/album/zoya-the-young-guard-suites-from-film-scores-mw0001958826
