Hopefully Johnny T. Williams will do the score...

We can dream, to be honest I say that because I think his time with Williams on blockbusters is clearly over, especially after the success of Ready Player One. I can see him leaning back on Silvestri again for this one.

I tried to imagine RPO with a Williams score, and I honestly couldn't hear it fitting all that well. I think what Silvestri wrote was better suited and also better than either of Williams' last two Star Wars scores (minus Rey's theme) for example, and I'm a huge fan of Williams' music from 1975-2005.

It was Williams who opted out of "Ready Player One" and recommended Silvestri.

I know, I still think it was meant to be, one way or another.

We disagree about the merits of that score, but that's fine, of course.

Regardless, I see no reason to believe that Spielberg will abandon his desire to work with Williams every chance he can. They are very, very close.

No disagreement there, they have one of the greatest friendships and composer collaborations in film history.

Anyway, we'll see if this film actually happens, and if it does, when. I am not of the belief that Williams will be scoring films until the end of time.

Geez, not Spielberg succumbing to the superhero craze too?

I'm sick and tired of superhero movies and TV shows, no matter how 'cutting edge' or 'original' they are. I had hoped Spielberg went after more interesting projects instead, like that Edgar Mortara adaptation.

Disappointed. I also don't believe Williams will score if he's still around. My guess is that, after the next STAR WARS, Williams will focus on concert works and smaller, intimate scores for Spielberg (á la THE POST).

I don't get why people think Williams will want to score smaller, more intimate films or opt out of Spielberg films in the coming years*
He missed BRIDGE OF SPIES due to a medical issue and other scores he was working on concurrently.
RPO was also due to other films he was working on at the time, minus the back surgery issue.
Maybe he did choose THE POST over RPO, or maybe it was purely down to the writing/recording schedule. I agree that Silvestri was a perfect fit for the latter, but it could have been just a case of serendipity.
I'm sure writing a spare, intimate score is just as hard (or easy, in Williams' case) as tackling a superhero film or space opera.
Sure, the fantasy films tend to require lots more music, but with collaborators like Conrad Pope and William Ross to hand, it's all just notes on a page. And Spielberg tends to spot things well with Williams (unlike the ridiculously over-scored LAST JEDI).

*although I agree he will always want time to write his classical/commissioned stuff.

It's the amount of music, Kev. While a sparse score isn't necessarily less challenging, it's no doubt less work. I just can't picture an 86-year-old churning out wall-to-wall-scored action flicks.

But INDY 5 will be such a case.
And what if Spielberg tackled a western. Would JW opt out of writing up all that spacious wall-to-wall music?

Didn't Spielberg predict that superhero films would destroy the industry? If you can't beat 'em, join 'em, right Stevie? wink

I'm sick and tired of superhero movies and TV shows, no matter how 'cutting edge' or 'original' they are.

You should be saying that about Ridley Scott and those putrid ALIEN films. Stop living in the past, Thor! wink

Spielberg and Scott are being left in the dust by Marvel Studios.

I'm with you on this one. But I still hope it will be one of those cases when Spielberg eventually decides to drop the project in favour of something else. He has done that before many times with many planned movies. He is my favourite director but I cannot see how his trademarks would find their way in a DC film. Mind you, I couldn' t really find his trademarks in Ready Player One! OK, I admit I'm not familiar with Blackhawk so maybe there's something in it that attracts Spielberg and could bring out the best of him, but I can only hope.

I'm only tired of the DC film universe, which to me really sunk after Man of Steel (just my opinion, no offense to fans meant in the slightest). I didn't even really care for Wonder Woman much.

It is interesting about SS doing this, I just wish it had been a Marvel character.

As much as I love Spielberg, I wish he’d stop lining up projects like this, assembly line fashion. I’d rather he was more fixated on the present & devoted all his time to really focussing on Indy 5 and making the script and then the film the best he can possibly make it, rather than just another sequel. It needs to be a fitting end to Harrison’s portrayal of the character.

Another superhero movie..... do we really need another right now? :/

We definitely don't need Indy 5. What is it about Star Wars and Indy fans that they're so optimistic? Inveterate gamblers are like this too.

Sure, there's the Williams score we "all" want, but Indiana Jones is a superhero. His clothes are as iconic as Superman's or Spider-Man's costumes, and though he often stumbles, Indy accomplishes superheroic deeds.

I believe SS is a "DC guy." IIRC, he grew up reading Sgt. Rock and I suppose Blackhawk comics, so his interest here makes sense.
