Of COURSE, but how many times have the Oscars given a statue to someone who had already died? Not many! I figure that they feel it would be a waste of a statue.

There have been sixteen posthumous Oscars awarded, which is not exactly insignificant, given that there aren't generally that many people vital enough to do great work in an exhausting field who suddenly drop dead.

In fact, the year of Obssession/Tax Driver, Peter Finch won a posthumous best actor award for Network.

Ummmm....James.... I was referring to the fact that since it was recorded just a few years ago, sending it out wouldn't have done a helluva lot of good! It was a "joke"! big grin

I got the joke (this time), Jim! We are but simple American swine, though.

Yeah, but hadn't the voting already occurred before he died?

You guys really want to take Jerry Goldsmith's one Oscar away, don't you?

Krikey, I long for those good ol' days when film scores were so outstanding that we were faced with these kinds of dilemmas. The long running debate over LION IN WINTER vs PLANET OF THE APES is another example.

Nope. He died two and a half months before the awards ceremony. His NY Times obituary says "Mr. Finch was the winner of numerous acting awards in this country and abroad. His rousing performance as Howard Beale, the demented news commentator in “Network.” was seen as virtually certain to win him an Academy Award nomination for best actor." So even the nominations had not yet been made.

And of course, Heath Ledger won thirteen months after he died. I don't think voters consider it a waste at all, but rather a last chance to honor somebody of note.

I have an actor friend who lost an Emmy to an actor who'd died earlier that year, and he joked "Of course I lost to the dead guy!"
