The passing of Tom Wolfe and the current interest in proposed Leonard Bernstein biopics suggests this question. Wolfe's famous 1970 essay about a party given by the Bernsteins to benefit the legal defense of some Black Panthers is considered a classic satire of elite Manhattan society. Others consider it a deeply unfair portrait that helped sow the seeds of cultural alienation. Judge for yourself:

One of the things that I love about Tom Wolfe is he makes me laugh even when I disagree with him. I am spacing on the title of his screed about modern art, but I thought it was hilarious, even thoughI love modern art.

The part that I remember about "Radical Chic" is that the clincher line of the support pitch was always, "Your donation is NOT tax deductible," which served as a seal of approval for the cause at hand.

I need to re-read "Radical Chic."

Phil Ochs wrote a song on the same subject, "The Party".
Check it out!
