This film was a nice surprise, an amusing, smart and uncompromising coming-of-age story, by first time filmmaker Bo Burnham with an impressive score by Scottish composer Anna Meredith (a new name to me) making her film score debut. It's synth-based, but quite original, bold and imaginative. There's a wonderful scene where Kayla, the insecure 13-year-old protagonist (Elsie Fisher), is invited to a pool party, and she stands in trepidation gazing out of a window at her peers, the cool kids, all laughing and frolicking in slow motion like a Pepsi commercial, and they play upon Kayla's fears, scoring the scene like Herrmann in a car wreck with Phillip Glass (I think the track is 'Nautilus'). Some scenes reminded me of Wendy Carlos, other times Mark Mothersbaugh, but it's an interesting musical voice, and a fun and moving film. The "Nautilus" track is one of her pre-existing tracks, but it's a really unique score overall (for this kind of film).

Oh.. I honestly thought there was a new score composed by eighth grader Anna Meredith (!), obviously a musical prodigy.... Wow.... How could you possibly mistake that I mean of all the nerve yeah I totally thought that too... Samples-wise, I like the Casio-ness of it all, as if an eighth grade prodigy would only have access to a keyboard. Any other teen films scored with similar idioms, like a school marching band or a garage band (non-source, of course)?
