I watched this last night after reading your review. It's a good movie, but I can't say I found it a gem, and if the ending had any shock value, it was blunted because it's inferred. Much like the hinting (rather than explicitly stated) condition of Rose's sexual activity. I got the impression she was pregnant, not a prostitute. Cagney's character had moments of being likable (with some of his real-life talents coming through) but was trumped by his sleazy exploitation and teasing presence around Rose. The climax of "Show them no mercy!"(1935)...now that's shocking!
