John Powell – How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - Deluxe Edition CD)
UPC: 888072570092
Release Date: March 22, 2024
Regular price$ 25.00

Expected to ship the week of March 22, 2024.

Varèse Sarabande completes its trilogy of Deluxe Editions of John Powell’s magnificent scores to the How to Train Your Dragon series with How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019). DreamWorks Animation’s third and final animated film is a heartfelt and bittersweet conclusion, written and directed by Dean DeBlois, as the “hidden world” of the title becomes a refuge for the dragons, which separate from humankind for their own protection.

Composer Powell, working closely with the filmmakers, set the theme for the final film: “With love comes loss.” “He articulated that exact phrase when we were talking,” says DeBlois in Tim Greiving’s new liner notes, “and I put that in the script. I think it is a powerful idea, that if you’re going to engage in the euphoria of love, then you have to recognize that there will be pain, inevitably—pain and separation.”

To complete the saga, Powell wrote a masterful, majestic score for large orchestra and choir, reprising themes from previous films and adding new ones in the best symphonic film music tradition. His ongoing Dragon collaborator, Icelandic singer Jónsi, wrote and performed the song, “Together From Afar.”

Powell’s Dragon scores are admired and beloved for their themes, emotion and symphonic majesty. This 2-CD set Deluxe Edition of The Hidden World is released in conjunction with Omni Music Publishing’s full printed score, allowing fans and scholars a rare opportunity to appreciate both the recordings and the written compositions of a pivotal work.

I'm not idiot (probably), but I still can't understand it - if you will be able to ship item only from March 22 (and 'cause it's current Varese, it's probably still not final date), WHY THE HELL YOU DO ANNOUNCEMENT ONE MONTH BEFORE?!?! (Sorry for caps lock)

Announcing things before they release is the normal way companies work. The film score labels doing the "we'll announce when ready" is a huge anomaly.

Does anyone know how much extra music is on this set in comparison with the OST? What's the total length? Since there are no details for this on the website of Varese. Since the tracklist is not the same it's hard to compare. Any help is welcome

[Interesting - I don't see the same "limited to 3,000 copies" wording typical of other CD Club releases.

Great to see Varese's International European store open again. Shame that they are now charging more for the CDs though.
$25.00 does not equate to £27.00.

Plausible deniability in case they only manage to ship 30 copies. big grin

For those who've received this release (my order is pending with some other titles) hows the master? What about the demos?

For those who've received this release (my order is pending with some other titles) hows the master? What about the demos?

The master isn't wildly different from the OST, just a tad less compressed. The new cues are pretty great though. "Setting Up Camp" is a jaunty little cue that passes the Berk themes from section to section of the orchestra. "New Berk Feast" is source music for woodwinds that wouldn't feel entirely out of place in a Miklós Rózsa scored historical epic. "Stronger Together" is another piece for woodwinds that starts out a little melancholic and introspective but ends on a more sprightly and jubilant note. "Grimmel's Surprise" is like a fleshed out version of the waterfall cue "Into the Hole." All great stuff. The demos didn't make much of an impression on me, but they rarely do.

Awesome, thanks for the info. Funny enough when I originally heard the OST it was my least favorite of the three but its really grown on me a lot and its now my favorite score of the trilogy.

I'm confused.

It's already sold out at the US Varese web store, after only four weeks?

I was waiting, hoping another retailer like SAE, LLL or Intrada would stock it, but none of them seem to have it.

I was trying to avoid buying direct from Varese because of their poor packaging and their shipping issues.

Have I missed it completely in the US? Is the CD totally sold out in America forever?

Or will they be pressing more?

It's listed at the Varese International website, but as a pre-order, shipping on March 22:

Can Americans order from the Varese International website too?

Well, I answered my own quesiton. I just successfully ordered one from the Varese Int'l storefront. Cost about $15 more, including shipping.

I also see why it sold out so quickly, I searched completed auctions at eBay, and saw one that sold last week (for only $11, sigh, if only I had looked there sooner).

Anyway, it says on the back that they only made 2000 of them, and they clearly committed a portion of those to the UK store.
